WHAT TO WEAR: Cold Weather

The new year is here and Chicago has already completed quite the turnaround with single digit temperatures, bitter wind and snowfall almost daily. With such harsh weather, I’m not going to lie, it is insanely hard to keep warm while also staying fashionable and comfortable! Ridiculous weather creates temptation to wear horrid, puffy coats that flatter absolutely no one. So, when I came across this Fashionista by our student center, I was taken aback at how well she created a stylish and weather appropriate outfit without one of those infamous Michelin man looking coats!

What works very well about this ensemble is the combination of neutral colors like black, brown and gray. They are subtle and work well together to keep her looking sharp yet casual. Her black accessories (the scarf and tote bag) accent the black in the coat flawlessly. This coat truly is a staple piece because it can be dressed up or down. Being comfortable enough in your own skin to wear an attention-grabbing article of clothing is admirable! To finish off the look, this Fashionista went with some gray, suede knee-high boots. These elongate her figure and definitely flatter her. I love these Steve Madden ones because of their rich, cognac color and the split in the back! Pair them with knee-high socks and you’re set.

One Simple Change: If you pair this look with a different coat, the whole look could be completely reinvented! The sexy knee-high boots and dark colors make the rest of this outfit perfect for a date night. To grab your date’s attention, I suggest wearing a bright colored coat like this one (duster coats are super trendy right now thanks to the Kardashian family). Plus, you’ll feel sexy in the gorgeous color!
