What to Wear

As a child, my fascination with one of the most quintessential fantasy literatures of all time, Alice in Wonderland, quickly became my source of inspiration for playing dress-up. I strove to emulate Alice’s famous whimsical, hyper-girlish outfits with clothing and costumes from my dress-up trunk—anything and everything from big skirts, tutus and thigh-high socks. My deep-rooted childhood antics have transpired into an appreciation for the fashion world’s ability to embrace the nature of fantasy with arms wide open.

Now, in a perfect world absent of any extreme and unbearable weather condition, I’m pretty convinced that any self-proclaimed Fashionista/o would happily claim day-to-day life as a glitzy wonderland prancing around in glamorous ensembles and dazzling garments; unfortunately, winter has come a-knockin’ in full force this year.

In a season characterized by cold weather and winter blues, it’s refreshing to witness individuals continue to explore the power of make-believe and imagination via personal style. Coincidentally enough, this Fashionista was on her way to meet an old friend for what she called a “ brunch tea date,” in her simple, yet chic outfit.  Her duo-seasonal look combining her close-fitting floral mini dress with two oversized winter coats achieves a level of pizzazz and energy often neglected in wintertime fashion. While layers are often sported in everyday street style, this Fashionista avoids the ubiquitous bulky puffball look by playing with different lengths, textures and palettes. Her warm-colored mini dress and open toed black, suede platforms are easily transformed into an appropriate winter ensemble with the addition of black opaque tights and jet-black, knit knee high socks. Lastly, her black floppy hat adds a subtle bohemian touch, uniquely personalizing an otherwise standard uniform for winter street wear.

One Simple Change: Preparing for a long day out and about in the city? Supplement this afternoon at the café ensemble with a knit infinity scarf and a vibrant colored satchel or oversized day clutch to store everyday necessities such as your on-the go makeup bag, wallet and cell phone.  Lastly, don’t forget to rock your favorite pair of “sunnies” to protect your eyes from winter sunlight!
