As unpredictable as fashion itself can be, the often bipolar Melbourne weather makes it tricky to pick out a forecast-appropriate outfit on an average day. One minute the sun is out, and the next minute it’s pouring rain. As Forrest Gump would say, “It’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re [going to] get.”
Thus, for any Melbourne Fashionista or Fashionisto, who spends time going back and forth from wardrobe to mirror, deciding on the day’s outfit, is more likely to take a longer time than the average person for getting ready. It often means bringing a jacket on a summer’s day, or wearing a pair of tights in winter that you can easily slip off when the sun comes out.
In January–the middle of summer–you would expect to see shorts and skirts on the streets, but, staying true to the random nature of Melbourne weather, I saw this Fashionista on a day that was windy, cold and grey. I was pleased, though, to see that her brightly coloured ensemble was a screw-you-salute to the dreary weather.
When the skies are dark, it’s always more fun and fashion-forward to brighten up the day with a few summer pieces to apply to your outfit. This Fashionista goes all out with a statement coat. You can play with this trend by wearing a neon color nail polish or lipstick, or you can choose brightly coloured accessories. Make sure that item remains the focal point of your outfit, and go easy on the rest of your look for maximum wow-power. I love that the other pieces in this Fashionista’s outfit are monochromatic, which helps her coat pop. Her pair of black jeans, booties and handbag really give the coat the attention it deserves. Plus, the coat’s box-cut silhouette is a great ode to the masculine shapes seen in Stella McCartney’s pre-fall 2013 collection. A chunky menswear-inspired Michael Kors watch is a great finishing touch.
My top tip for the colder days is to layer! Like this Fashionista has done, choose an oversize coat or jacket so it’s easier to layer pieces underneath. I love this Fashionista’s metallic top that peeks out from behind the coat. When the weather takes a turn, like it so often does in Melbourne, peel off a layer and you’ll be stylish and temperature-appropriate in a flash!
One Simple Change: Tangerine, black and white make for a killer colour combo, so substituting a white collared shirt and some metallic gold accessories with this outfit would look amazing.
