Imagine a sea of tents spread across the expanses of your campus, one of which holds the key to all your career aspirations. That is essentially what a career fair is to any ambitious college Fashionista/o. Meeting prospective employers, giving out resumés and making an impression isn’t always easy. But, there is a way to take advantage of such a unique chance: do it in style.
This Fashionista happened to be walking around campus in what I personally think is the most effective and chic ensemble for a career fair. First, she utilized some structured basics that should be in every Fashionista/o’s wardrobe. A plain, white button-up is all the rage no matter the season or occasion. It can easily be worn to contrast in a pantsuit, or layered under a sweater for a more casual day. This Fashionsta kept it on the more casual side by keeping the top unbuttoned but the shirt itself tucked in.
Her pants are a great mix between modern-chic and young-professional. The right pair of skinny pants is versatile, and you will never have to worry about length or tightness of a dress or skirt while hunting for an internship or job. For young professionals and Fashionistas/os everywhere, black pants like these are a staple. Her pants were particularly great because they had zippers at the bottom, which have been circling the blogging scene for the past few seasons now.
To coordinate with her black pants, this Fashionista kept the structure and color scheme uniform with a black blazer. I especially liked her blazer because it was oversized and a bit less dressy than your typical business blazer. Another great part about her blazer is that it has shortened sleeves, which lengthen her arms and dress down the staunch contrast between black and white. Since career fairs usually take place on campus, there is no point in pulling out your Armani pantsuit, just to get it dirty. After all, a fair is far different than an interview.
The base of this Fashionista’s outfit is the standard professional color scheme, so she had to be creative with her accessories to make the outfit really stand out. She utilized variations of cream and brown as accents against the black and white, which make the outfit prim and coordinated when meeting with a prospective employer without looking overdone. Her diamond-shaped chandelier earrings, thinly braided belt and patent leather studded flats all can be worn for a number of casual occasions. Utilizing elements of everyday wear creatively like this shows employers that you are someone who can be innovative, accountable and not afraid to think outside of the box.
When you gaze across the sea of tents and ponder the possibilities of your future, make sure to have a stack of thorough resumés, business cards and a genuine smile. The future is your canvas, and if you speak as well as you dress, the ideal internship or job will be yours for the taking.
One simple change: This Fashionista has a quaffed center-part hairstyle for a day to meet professionals. But, for a casual night out with friends, she can remove the bobby pins and go for a carefree and wavy hairdo.
