After an all-nighter either spent studying or out on the town, brunch is the time where many college students finally arise from their sleep for their first meal of the day. Somewhere between the hours of nine and eleven in the morning, it’s too late for breakfast, yet it is not quite lunch time. Brunch, although relaxed and casual, and likely to involve more than one cup of coffee, is still a bit more chic than breakfast or lunch, so your mid-morning meal attire needs to match. Forget tight collared shirts or I-have-to-lie-on-my-back-to-button-them-up skinny jeans for your brunch dates, yet don’t pull out the track suits either!
Take this comfortably dressed and, simultaneously, stylish Fashionista, for instance. I was walking around the local strip of cafés when I found her, a Fashionista who was the very epitome of chilled out chic and was sitting with some friends in the sunshine. Immediately, her vibrant pink dress caught my attention, bringing up images of the color blocking seen in Diane von Furstenberg’s spring/summer 2013 ready-to-wear collection at New York Fashion Week. Wearing a bright colour is lots of fun during the warmer months, but is also a great way to make a casual look more eye catching and more perfect for a laid-back brunch.
I also love how this Fashionista matched her pink MAC lipstick to her dress; I made a mental note to visit the MAC counter to check out that gorgeous shade. Sometimes the best accessory a Fashionista can have is her smile, so why not show yours off with a fun lip colour? It’s an easy and instant way to dress up an outfit, and it definitely adds a bit of modernity and edginess to this Fashionista’s look.
In order to tone down the bold pink in her outfit, I love how the other elements of her look are soft and hassle-free. Her delicate silver necklace is a lovely touch to her striking dress, and she tells me, with a smile, that it was a gift from her boyfriend. Plus, her hair, mimicking a Taylor Swift up-do, is super pretty. Her hairstyle is a great example of a fuss-free way to look glamorous. As for her shoes, this Fashionista chooses a pair of flats over heels, which matches the low-key nature of brunch. She earns extra points for the rounded cut-outs around the sole, which are not only a trend, but are very practical for the warm weather in the Aussie summer.
ONE SIMPLE CHANGE: For a night time look, you could swap the fine detail necklace for a collar-style statement piece. Anything with jewel tones or metallic will really set off the pink of a dress.
