What’s better than waking up in the late morning, grabbing brunch with your best friends and then taking a stroll along the beach? Probably very few things. When preparing to stuff your face with crispy bacon and fluffy pancakes and then soaking in the salt sea breeze and roaring waves afterwards, you want to wear something that’s comfortable, but Instagram appropriate. Since we live in a generation that enforces the “pictures or it didn’t happen” mentality, our smartphones are always by our side, ready to snap photos at any event so we can update our Instagram with a handful of hashtags and filtered pictures. Brunch obviously is no exception, so it’s imperative that you wear an outfit that doesn’t disappoint your followers, but also doesn’t have you squirming and wishing you just stayed in bed in your soft and roomy pajamas.
My solution is always a maxi skirt or dress with an oversized cardigan. This Fashionista exemplifies how such a combo offers the best of both worlds. She pairs her maxi skirt with a cotton tank top—both great clothing choices when you want comfortable apparel. As I’ve said before, maxi skirts are basically trendy looking sweatpants. They offer the same relaxed feel, but kick away the unaesthetic look of those “balloon pants”. As far as cotton tank tops, do I even need to elaborate? She tops off her look with a simple oversized gray cardigan. A large cardigan is more or less the outerwear equivalent of the maxi skirt and instantly infuses a boho vibe into any look, which is always a plus in my biased book. For accessories, she wears a chunky statement necklace (always a good idea when you’re looking to dress up an outfit) with a red lip.
One Simple Change: For a heat wave, ditch the cardigan and switch the crop tank with a black bandeau. If a bandeau and maxi skirt combo is too bare for you, just add a denim vest for a boho chic look that will keep you cool on a hot summer day.
