WHAT TO WEAR: Back to School

June 10th, 2015 at 2:10am

Summer classes are back in session, ladies and gentleman. Whether it’s to your dismay or delight, we can’t be hitting the snooze button any longer. We may still be tempted to sleep in, especially when the sight outside our window isn’t comforting. The weather in NYC is still acting like an adolescent teenager, not sure which direction it wants to lean towards. Rain has been pelting the city streets. Yet all of these negative factors hasn’t stopped this Fashionista from placing her best foot forward.

What better way to make a first impression on a dreary, soaked day than wear an eye catching white-on-white ensemble. Of course, you can take the comfortable route by opting for sweats and hiding that beautiful face within the safe confines of your hoodie, but where’s the fun in that? Regardless, if this isn’t your first time at school or your last semester before graduation, the first day of any new chapter in life can be liberating, so let’s aim to make our mark.

This Fashionista already had the right attitude in mind. White jeans can be intimidating to wear, particularly when you commute to a campus where you’re one step away from plunging your foot into muddy patches of grass, but the item can be a standout choice. The skinny cut of the jeans elongates the figure and helps bring attention to the ethereal sleeves and hem of the top. This unique blouse is the lovechild of a demure execution with a pinch of playfulness. It has a color-block of nude and crème, with a tailored bodice and sheer sleeves. The peter pan collar instantly creates a look of professionalism, paradoxically portrayed through casualwear. To continue the preppy nature of this look, the Fashionista wore black suede loafers. She kept her jewelry minimal with a dainty beaded bracelet and an elegant ring, which matched the hardware of her cross-body bag. Depending on how many classes you have the first day, you can switch this miniature bag for a black tote instead.

Choose jeans that include a percentage of spandex to ensure comfort when you’re sitting in those long lecture classes. A lightweight top that doesn’t cling to the body can help keep you refreshed in the humidity. You can also reverse the proportions by selecting a loose skirt or shorts, with a sleeveless top. By sticking to neutrals and having fun with details, such as a striking neckline, you can still keep your outfit comfortable and open for memorable conversation starters. A clean, presentable look can help distract you from the impeding threat of drowsiness that’s trying to bring you down.

One Simple Change: Have a back to school party or planning to wind down after the first day with a night out? Slip out of your loafers into a pair of minimalist heels. A shoe with simple bands around the toes and ankles will boost your height and add that extra swing to your hips.
