STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Sweater Weather

Style Advice of the Week

One thing I love and hate about fall weather is how unpredictable it can be. One day it’s frigid outside and the next day it’s beautiful. With weather like this, it’s no surprise that knit and wool sweaters are the most classic clothing staples for autumn. Somehow, knit and wool sweaters are always able to keep us warm in the cold and comfortable on the nicer days of fall.

While knit/wool sweaters come in a variety of options, I’m definitely in love with this Fashionista’s piece (though I have to admit, what initially drew me to her was the vibrant purple/pink ombre of her hair!) After getting a closer look, I realized that what made this sweater stand out was not the color, but the fringe along the bottom of the sweater. For this season, major sweater trends include slightly oversized looks and sweaters that are shorter in the front and gradually get longer towards the back. Free People usually has a wide selection of oversized sweaters for the fall and American Apparel has several sweaters this year that are increasingly longer towards the back. Some of my favorite designs for this fall are by Helmut Lang. Their pieces look comfortable, effortlessly modern and many of their sweaters feature the same slightly oversized look and high-low quality of this Fashionista’s outfit.

To get this look, start with a simple tank top. This Fashionista mimics the hem of her sweater by pairing it with a high-low skirt, a popular trend this past summer that is perfect for the fall in a darker hue. Finally, layer a sweater on top to stay cozy. With an open front and high-low hem, this sweater is perfect for any fall day and in a neutral color, can go with any outfit you layer it over! While a good knit/wool sweater can be a bit expensive, it's definitely a worthwhile investment in the long run, especially when you're wrapped up in it every fall.
