With the holidays coming around, I always have a hard time deciding what to wear to family dinners, festive parties or even just to meet old friends from home. Many times I find myself getting tired of my wardrobe, re-wearing the same dresses, tops and combinations of outfits over and over again. If you feel the same, don’t worry. While it may seem hard to always “dress to impress”, aiming for a casual-chic look is often easier than you think.
This week’s Fashionista is wearing a collared shirt, sweater, duffle coat and trousers. What I love about this outfit is that it reminds me of the holidays without being overly obvious. While the basic outfit is neutral in its black, white and grey tones, the duffle coat gives the outfit a pop of color that sets it apart. It’s a sweet and comfortable look that’s easy to wear and the collar adds just enough dressiness for any casual occasion.
Recreating this look is easy. Simply layer a crew neck sweater over a collared shirt for an effortlessly put together look. I like pairing pieces with similar colors; it’s an easy way to make everything in the outfit come together. For a festive detail, pick a collared shirt with a print that stands out from the sweater. You can even play with different types of collars. For instance, this Fashionista chose a shirt with a hard black trim on the edges of the collar. There are lots of options depending on your preference: a Peter Pan collar, a beaded collar, a collar with metal tabs or some sort of statement collar. This neckline also elongates your neck and doubles as a necklace. Of course, if you are wearing a simpler collared shirt, a long and thin chain necklace would also pair well. Finish the look off with boots, stud earrings, a purse and you’re ready to go. To dress it up a bit more or even take the look from day to night, swap the tote for a clutch, black wedge booties instead of the boots and set your hair in a top bun. Dressing well should be fun, not stressful! For more inspiration on layering, check out this video by LEAF on ways to wear a white button-up. Good luck on the first day of finals!
