STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Color Me Denim

Style Advice of the Week

Denim has been around for ages; whether it is the original jean jacket or rainbow of colored jeans, everyone can agree that denim is always a smart buy. Now there is an even better reason to buy staple denim vests, jackets and pants: denim on denim is trending.

This fashionista pulls off denim on denim in the best way: Mixing light-wash with dark. Yes, you can wear a light-wash denim vest with dark jeans, or vice versa. Stray away from wearing the same colored denim all over, mixing and matching denims is what makes this trend work. Her long white tank clearly separates the two pieces of denim and her neon sandals adds the touch of summer bright that this outfit needs. Both her jeans and vest are simple, without much hardware. This makes it easy to style this look, and to wear both pieces separately. For example, her vest would look great over a billowy floral dress.

As seen on the Acne 2012 runway, denim on denim is having a moment, and can effortlessly be worn into fall. While the weather in Dallas is still blazing, fall is on the horizon which means cooler weather and the protection of jean is a welcoming thought. To be comfortable and fashion-forward is always a plus! Jeans can be worn with boots and scarves along with your trusty denim vest, button-down or jacket.

In order to pull of the denim trend, you need to invest in the perfect denim pieces. In my opinion, denim vests look great with skinny jeans. These J Brand skinny jeans are the perfect dark wash to compliment a lighter denim vest. My personal favorite pairing of denim on denim is this J Crew button down with these Citizens of Humanity super flare jeans. The flattering flare of these jeans looks great with this effortlessly tucked in button down. Don’t forget the trusty jean shorts, I just picked up a pair of Brandy Melville shorts that literally go with everything, including my vintage Levi's jean jacket. Though this is an easy trend to wear, you cannot forget to make it feminine. If you are wearing an oversized denim shirt or jacket, compliment it with tight jeans or cute shorts. It is easy to think of denim as masculine, but with all the options of denim out there you can easily find pieces that balance this look!
