One of the major perks of living in New York City is the proximity to a plethora of world-renowned businesses, restaurants, hospitals, magazines, etc. Located literally in the center of it all, NYU students have no excuse not to pick up an internship for the spring semester or summer. This week, I scouted out Jackie, a second semester sophomore with an amazing internship at Time Out New York.
This Fashionista’s outfit looks professional for the office but also youthful and fresh. Jackie wore a sleek black blazer by Comptoir des Cotonniers and a colorful watercolor buttoned blouse underneath, providing a splash of color. She finished it off with a pair of conservative black skinny pants, booties with a small heel and a few quiet pieces of jewelry that are subtle enough for the office. A tailored gray peacoat provides some sophisticated structure to her outfit.
To get this look, start with a simple black blazer with a clean silhouette. Pair it with a punchy blouse or for a more feminine approach go with a frill front embroidered blouse. You could also reverse solids and prints with a patterned blazer and a solid blouse instead. A strong coat can also prove extremely useful and is a good investment to make as you can wear it to class, out at night and to formal occasions or events you need to make a good impression at. Try a colorblocked version for extra oomph or a solid black for a classic look. Finally, invest in some simple jewelry that you can wear everyday. Jackie’s bracelets are vintage and were given to her by her grandmother but you can certainly find simple bracelets anywhere now. Try a crystal studded silver bracelet or a thin, gold bangle.
One Simple Change: If your internship is fashion or art related, chances are you’ll have more leeway for wardrobe flexibility. Go a little more intense by switching the basic black pant with a patterned pair.
