Hello, Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Vera Hanson and I’m a freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle. This is my first time working as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to Wednesday’s FASHIONISTA/O SPOTLIGHT section.
While my style varies from day to day, I tend to gravitate towards a more neutral palette. Color can be great, but most of the time, I stick to warmer and often muted tones. I like to offset my more unique items with classic pieces such as a solid-colored sweater or a traditional pair of jeans. I don’t disagree that sometimes the simpler, the better; but nevertheless, taking a risk or putting together a statement outfit can be way more exciting. One of the things I love most about fashion is that each day you wake up as a blank canvas. Depending on how you’re feeling or what you’re inspired by, you can change how you dress. Personal style is constantly evolving!
Most of the pieces in my closet are from H&M, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Anthropologie and/or ModCloth. All of these stores are phenomenal and offer both trendy and interesting items. But, I’m also a firm believer in vintage shopping and thrift stores. It’s so satisfying to find special, unique pieces after hours and hours of hunting through racks of clothes. While I’m still unsure about whether or not I will someday work in the fashion industry, for now, I know that personal style is a great and immediate way to be creative and to take risks. Don’t be afraid to pair cheetah print with unlikely patterns and don’t hesitate to put layer upon layer upon layer. Style should be just as much about having fun as anything else!
