In college and in fashion, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Oscar Wilde was a wise man that so eloquently wrote this famous quote and believed that knowledge is power and style is confidence. And with these two qualities, I trust that one can conquer anything.
My name is Vanessa Powell and I am a sophomore Public Relations major at Hofstra University. I am so excited to be on board again with the 2013 Style Guru team. This is my third semester writing for CollegeFashionista, and it is going to be the most stylish one yet!
You can read about my passions and background in my first Style Guru Bio, and a part of my journey living in NYC over the summer here in my second. As I continue to write for CollegeFashionista, I will also be continuing a fashion PR internship that I’ve held last spring and summer at Cameo Public Relations in midtown Manhattan.
This semester is going to be all about individuality and taking risks. When you think of college fashion, you may think of Uggs, Northface and a Weatherproof backpack, but my fellow classmates here at Hofstra bring college style to the next level. With our campus residing right outside one of the most fabulous trendsetting cities in the world, students are constantly encouraged to show off new and unique looks in a place where the possibilities are endless.
In the words of fashion legend, Alexander McQueen , “It’s a new era in fashion – there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.” McQueen sums up why fashion is so fascinating. There is such a broad spectrum of style that exists nowadays along with great opportunity on the notion of respectfully presenting oneself for the day.
The idea of showcasing an outfit through Twitter, Instagram, a style blog or any other form of social media has recently exploded across the world, especially with hash-tag “OOTD” (acronym for outfit of the day.) We are in the midst of the digital age, and sharing photos on the Internet has become a top priority for some people ultimately inspiring them to play with style as McQueen described. It’s such an exciting time for fashion, and just like at the beginning of a new semester, the start of a new season marks a clean slate, fresh opportunity and the excuse to buy new shoes!
It’s time to ambush the chic and statement-making students with the rest of my style guru team here at Hofstra. I’ll be writing the for Fashionista/o Spotlight section every Wednesday, handpicking those style-worthy students to be interviewed and photographed for my column.
