At Villanova, we are in smack in the middle of an intense midterm exams week. I’m always observing (read: either appreciating or critiquing) the outfits and accessorizes of my fellow classmates. This week I’ve been pretty disappointed in the choices they’ve been making. Sweats, leggings and hats have replaced sweaters, skinny jeans and bangles. I’m all for simplicity and comfort when holing up in the library, but what happened to dress well, test well? I stopped this Fashionista as she was walking into a theology midterm. Her outfit of skinny jeans, tapered at the ankle; polished tan Tory Burch flats; and an oversized, neon pink Free People waffle shirt is the definition of test-taking chic. In a sea of sweats and leggings, I was attracted to this Fashionista because of the uniqueness of her scarf. Her outfit is both causal and comfortable. Her funky, tasseled wool Free People scarf adds a level of trend and originality to a simple, casual silhouette.
Scarves, scarves, scarves! They’re probably the easiest addition to any outfit. Let’s take a minute to flash back in our personal fashion history and reflect on our first scarf — a serious moment in the evolution of every Fashionista’s personal style. Mine, I believe, was a checkered white and blue linen American Eagle scarf. I used to tie it by folding it in half, making a little keyhole and tucking the other end through the hole. I also used to let the knot sit tightly right at my neck. Trendy, I know. I’ve since created a collection of colorful, unique scarves of various materials and for all seasons. (I’ve also learned cuter and trendier ways to tie them, thank God.) The best scarves don’t just accent an outfit; they add trend, sass and originality to simple looks of jeans and shirts. When choosing scarves, as with all accessories, look for pieces that will add to your outfits, not just complement your closet. Though the ultimate accessory, I feel as if the accessorizing power scarves is often overlooked. This Fashionista’s look, though simple, is proof of the power of a funky and unique scarf.
Spotted: Each season Burberry updates its iconic print, revamping its classic wool and silk scarves — must-haves for all Fashionistas! Emilio Pucci is famous for her colorful geometric printed scarves. But if you’re looking to add edge to a simple outfit, Alexander McQueen skull scarves are the way to go. They’ve just been added to the top of my lust list!
