ACCESSORIES REPORT: Hipster Flare

Accessories Report

Just as it seems there is a late fall and winter uniform for girls, fraternity boys have a uniform themselves. Villanova boys are big fans of L.L.Bean boots, Sperry Top-Siders, plaid, colored pants and backwards hats. While girls are bound to a similar, previously mentioned uniform of oversized sweaters, leggings and riding boots, we make good use of accessories to personalize each outfit. We understand accessories’ important functions: personalizing outfits, transitioning sweaters and tops from day to night, tying together a look and making an outfit your own.

As Fashionistas, there’s no excuse for not accessorizing. We have the endless options of scarves, fur, studs, headbands and the ultimate accessory: jewelry. The options for boys are a bit more limited, so when I saw Fashionisto I had to stop him. I was attracted to this Fashionisto because of his hipster take on the classic, preppy fraternity boy look. Through channeling aspects of the Villanova frat boy uniform, with the help of accessorizing, this Fashionisto’s look is effortlessly personalized and trendy.

He rocks perfectly broken in gray jeans, a hunter green long sleeve T-shirt under a deep green and royal blue plaid button-down. He paired it with a hunter green vest, accented by hunter green details on his backwards hat. His hipster staple thick-rimmed, wayfarer glasses and jeans tucked into the high-top, worn in, leather Timberlands added edge to the usual jeans and a plaid flannel. I would have loved this look even more with the addition of a scarf like this one from Urban Outfitters.

It seems to me boys at Villanova fear accessories are a purely feminine fashion statement, but this Fashionisto’s look shows how even the simplest additions and substitutions add flare to an outfit. Don’t be afraid to accessorize! Ditch the Sperry’s for more alternative footwear, and be confident enough to rock scarf and glasses. I think I speak for the entire Fashionista population when I say nothing make us swoon more than when Justin Timberlake, Bradley Cooper and David Beckham rock thick, horn-rimmed wayfarer glasses. So Villanova fraternity boys, listen up! Add a little hipster flare to your preppy uniform and the sorority girls will take notice!

Spotted: The Marc by Marc Jacobs 2013 pre-fall line infuses street wear and sports wear for a youthful, blended hipster look. Think knee-length prepster shorts paired with graphic tees and oxfords matched with snap-backs. The effect is a high-end take on hipster meets prepster: fraternity Fashionisto’s take note!
