FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: David Melo

Fashionisto Spotlight

There is always one person that gets my attention during class and it is not necessarily the professor. I had this Fashionisto in one of my courses during the last spring semester, and I will literally go to class wondering what he was going to wear. Luckily, I have class with him this fall. I finally got the opportunity to meet him and talk about his style.

Name: David Melo

Major: Marketing

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?

David Melo: I bought almost everything from thrift stores. The pants, shirt and hat are vintage. My shoes are Via Spiga and the belt is Pierre Cardin. I bought the ring in a flea market at Port Isabel, TX. Everything except the bag, which is from Target, was less than 5 dollars!

CF: What inspires your look?

DM: I have a lot of different influences, but basically what inspires my look is people from other countries. The European look is my favorite. Also, I am very influenced by Japanese animation because of the attention to detail that they give to their character's clothes.

CF: Where do you usually shop?

DM: About 99% of my clothes are from thrift stores. My favorite stores are H&M, Gap and ALDO.

CF: Do you follow trends?

DM: I have to say that I don’t necessarily follow trends right now. I think that if something looks good today it will always look good. As long as you style clothes correctly, you can always be trendy.

CF: Dressing different from others can drive a lot of attention. Are you comfortable standing out from the crowd?

DM: When I was in high school, I was wearing what everyone else wore. I didn’t liked to stand out. When I graduated and I got into college, I realized that right now is the time to play with my style and that I can wear whatever I really like. Some people might say that I dress like a “weirdo” but now I really don’t care. I like the idea of inspiring others with my style. I actually started a fashion club to meet people who are interested in fashion, to share and talk about related topics.

How To: To recreate this “urban dandy” look, start building your outfit with cropped pants. Pair them with casual loafers, a color matching color leather work bag and a simple V-neck shirt. Don’t forget to add a nice belt and wear a blazer when the weather is appropriate. Finally, have fun creating the dandy look and don’t be afraid of being yourself, because the best thing to be is unique!
