I first read the term “gender free” in the review of fall 2012 Comme des Garcons at Style.com. I was fascinated by the fact that clothes can be designed for people without specifying womenswear or menswear. Trends are trends and they don’t have to be especially for a gender, I think. This has been around for a long time — the pants, for example. In the beginning, they were exclusively for men and women got to wear them in the middle to late 20th century. How many times have we seen the look of menswear for women? CollegeFashionistas around the country are wearing this look, like this Fashionista from Belmont University. Likewise, boys are starting to wear what was intended to be women's. The Fashionisto that I am presenting today is wearing skinny colored jeans with ballet flats! I was lucky to find the perfect example on campus.
Name: Amancio Chapa
Major: Philosophy
Year: Senior
CollegeFashionista: Describe what you are wearing right now.
Amancio Chapa: I am wearing Sam Edelman Hampton flats, green skinny jeans, Ralph Lauren sport shirt and bag from Tommy Hilfiger. My blazer and sunglasses are from Gap.
CF: How do you know how to wear trends?
AC: I love trends and finding trends. I usually don’t look for particular person. I think that it’s a mixture of people that I look to for inspiration. I have the Style.com app where I look for the latest fashion. I read Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and W magazine to get the latest trends.
CF: What do you do to transition from summer to fall?
AC: Sometimes it’s good that here is not really cold during fall/winter because I can wear my favorite clothes from summer. For example, animal print, color blocking or mixing prints are my favorites. I just need to add some accessories to get the fall touch in my outfit.
CF: What do you look for in an outfit?
AC: My outfits need to be versatile. I like to go from school to a night out with friends, adding some accessories without changing the whole look. I like clothes that are standard so I can mix and match or add anything else to put in my personal style.
How to: The main thing you need to do is mix and match colors. My suggestion to recreate this look is these yellow with gray Antoine & Stanley Phillippe saddle shoes. Pair them with skinny green jeans like these from Urban Outfitters. Finally, wear this nectar white multi-stripe T-shirt with a gray H&M blazer. This Fashionisto’s outfit reminded me of Marc Jacobs fall 2012 men’s collection. If Marc Jacobs added color to his winter collection, it’s totally in this fall!
