STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wrapped Up

Style Advice of the Week

Coming back to campus after Thanksgiving was a bit of a rude awakening: the ground was covered with snow. Unfortunately, we won't be having a repeat of last year's fall snow-free semester. Winter is upon us and nothing makes that more clear than the looming approach of final exams. With the semester coming to an end, nothing is more important than staying comfortable during those long nights in the library and of course, staying warm on those cold walks back home. That means thick sweaters, casual tees, your favorite jeans and flat shoes. However, practical doesn’t mean boring—dress up your end of semester ensembles with bold scarfs, warm colors and the coziest outerwear.

Today’s Fashionista rocks an outfit that’s a perfect fusion of comfort and style. With dark skinny jeans and a cozy gray sweater, she embraces a practical sense of style for the colder months. She dresses up her outfit with a bright orange thick scarf and jeweled flats.

Scarves are one of the best winter accessories to show off your sense of style and even an extra pop to your outfit. You can go with a fun and unique pattern, or even an eye-catching print, like this map of the United Kingdom scarf. Of course, an infinity scarf is an easy way to get the looped look—try a cute pattern like polka dots. And of course, no winter wardrobe is complete without a classic solid color thick woven scarf.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wrapped Up

Style Advice of the Week

The first thing that usually comes to mind when I think of the wrap dress is Diane von Furstenberg. She essentially pioneered the iconic dress in the 1970s. Over the years, there have been many hybrids of the original from various designers—showing that this look continues to get stronger as fashion-forward crowds continue to look for the newest thing. Walking by student campus housing, this Fashionista caught my eye with her interpretation of the wrap dress.

This Fashionista’s dress from Aritzia gives the perfect example of how the wrap dress is such a versatile piece. The draping, for example, helps define shape, but the length shows off the right amount of leg. The cream colour is ideal for fall and matches well with the brown hues from her braided skinny belt (which also cinches in the waist) from Urban Outfitters and ankle boots from Aldo.

I really am understating the versatility of the wrap dress and variations of it because there is so much that can be said about it. The dress can fit just about every body type, be worn for all types of occasions and can be worn for any season. For this fall/winter, pair a wrap dress with a blazer or cardigan, a pair of knee high boots, some cute accessories, and there you have a great ensemble. It really is that easy.

The runways of the spring 2013 ready to wear seasons provide great inspiration. On the runway of Diane von Furstenberg, this dress just shows how far von Furstenberg has come since the '70s–it has a loose, drapey, but modern silhouette in a bright turquoise and white colour. Another designer, Donna Karan, shows off her take with this pink dress cinched at the waist with a belt.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wrapped Up

Uncategorized

During the dead of winter it is often hard to wear the same winter jacket over and over again. It is important to invest in at least two different winter coats. One should be your go-to jacket for a day look, while the other one should be for more fashionable occasions. Your day jacket should be warm, comfortable and obviously chic. The jacket is something you throw on to run errands, catch a yoga class or on your way to the library. But when choosing a day jacket, make sure it makes a statement like this Fashionista’s black wool wrap jacket. This Fashionista looks amazing! Remember, when you invest in a piece that makes a strong statement you don’t have to accessorize as much! This jacket meets all of the requirements of a comfortable day yet still has a high fashion feel. The brown rugged combat boots add color and make her outfit downtown chic. If you like this look, check out this BB and Daktoa jacket. Try and pick a jacket that complements your body and personal style. If a majority of your wardrobe is earth tone colors, then stick to a brown or black winter jacket. If you have a more classic look check out this cool cape jacket from ASOS. It is normal to get tired of your jacket so be a College Fashionista and try a new statement jacket that will re-vamp your look.
