STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Winter White

Style Advice of the Week

If you live on the East Coast or in an area with a similar climate, then you know how dreary winter days can be. The sky becomes almost completely dark by 5:00 p.m. and there aren’t any leaves on the trees. However, it seems as though the single greatest thing about an East Coast winter is snow. It’s white, symbolic, festive, fun and serves as a great contrast to the otherwise dull atmosphere. So, why not add white into our winter wardrobes as well?

When I spotted this Fashionista, I was pleasantly surprised that she hadn’t followed the “no white after Labor Day” fashion “rule” to a T. Instead, she was wearing an adorable, yet extremely practical bomber style white winter coat complete with a faux fur hood (another super trend for the season). I loved that the coat was a similar style to the types of blouses that have been popular these fall and winter seasons—simple and sweet but still makes a statement. In a city full of black coats, black pants and black boots, this Fashionista’s coat was definitely a breath of fresh air. It also made me come to remember that white is a neutral color just as black is, and can be paired in a multitude of ways. This Fashionista decided to wear a pair of black pants tucked into a pair of tall brown leather boots and contrasted the neutral look with a mint green shirt (another hot color this season).

Winter white is an angelic, uplifting and festive twist that you should add to your closet this holiday season. If you’re looking for a new outfit to wear this upcoming Christmas, check out this white Cable knit Sweater Dress from Joe Fresh. It would look great with some apple red lipstick and a pair of tall leather boots.

If you want a winter white coat like this Fashionista’s, try the DKNY Faux Fur Trim Split Hood Quilted Bomber coat from Nordstrom.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Winter White

Style Advice of the Week

Following the recent snowfall on Marist's campus, there has been a resurgence of fur coats, cold weather boots and layers upon layers of clothing. While walking home from the cafeteria, I was awestruck by this Fashionista's white sweater against the white, beautiful snow-covered backdrop.

Tranquil and pure like snow, a white sweater is a fashionable and functional choice for a productive Sunday afternoon in winter. The Fashionista's trendy fur vest adds an additional layer of warmth for walking around on campus. Paired with simple denim, boots and a belt, this look is simple; but, popping with the white on white. Lately at Marist, I've been spotting a comeback for white clothing choices. Long-sleeved white dresses have been a popular choice for evening outings and white denim has made a daytime appearance in classes. Piperlime has a featured section on white denim that has pages of options for any Fashionista. These skinny jeans by Hudson would look great with some crazy, colorful heels and a basic top. When it comes to white tops like today's Fashionista, Brandy Melville has an array of staple blouses. The Estelle top is drapey and versatile pairing well with the latest trend of colorful jeans! A white shirt would be chic against bold fuschia or red jeans.

The rules of the Labor Day associated color are long gone and there's so many options when wearing clothing as white as snow.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Winter White

Uncategorized

Now that cool temperatures seem to be here to stay, it’s finally time for outwear to make its debut on college campuses. While bright-hued coats are a big trend this season, nothing looks quite as classic as a knee-length white or cream colored coat. Reminiscent of the mod fashion of the 1960s, a white coat creates comparisons to timeless fashion icons like Jackie O. and Twiggy. Outerwear can be expensive for Fashionistas on a budget, but white coats never go out of style, so any white coat you buy will be an investment piece you can wear for years. For Fashionistas looking for a great buy, try a white coat  from Old Navy.

A coat like this Fashionista’s can instantly make a simple outfit look runway ready, and today’s Fashionista is no exception. In the colder months, it’s sometimes rare to see college students going to class in something other than UGGS and North Face jackets, so this Fashionista’s sophisticated outfit really caught my eye. Her printed, belted mini-dress is cute and classy, and paired with black leather boots, the outfit looks perfectly put-together. To add a little flair to her outfit, this Fashionista chose pale blue tights, a great alternative to black opaques when you need to brighten up an outfit.

This outfit, paired with her white coat, creates a look that is timeless and trendy at the same time. While this Fashionista looks great on her way to class, an outfit like this can also be worn to an internship or job interview. It can sometimes be difficult to combine professional attire and style for jobs and internships (especially in the winter) but by adding a classic white coat to your work wardrobe, you can be sure not to have to compromise fashion to look put-together and professional.

Hint: Despite the dated “rule” of no white after Labor Day, white can be worn all year round; it just needs to be in an appropriate fabric. For example, white linen or eyelet may not be appropriate for winter, but a white sweater dress or white wool coat like this Fashionista's is a great way to brighten up your fall neutrals without going overboard on colors.
