STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Winter Maxi

Style Advice of the Week

What's your favorite summer staple that you haven't been able to wear since the first day of October? Is it those jean cut-off shorts? That perfect summer sundress? What about those long, sheer maxi skirts? I often reminisce about slipping into a long skirt, loose tank top and pair of sandals on my way out into a balmy August evening. But what happens to my favorite summer staple when snow starts to hit the ground? Certainly not into hibernation like those jean cut-offs!

I found this Fashionista rocking her own maxi skirt in the middle of December and had to take a picture. She wore a bright orange jersey dress with tall black boots and a heavy knit sweater. I love how she accessorized her outfit with an added pop of color around her neck. The green and orange knit circle scarf brought the whole ensemble together. For a similar maxi, try this Wicked Crochet Maxi Dress by NASTY GAL—how great is the crochet detailing at the neck?

The key to accessorizing a maxi dress during the winter is layering. I love layering printed knit tights underneath a sheer skirt or maxi with slits, not only to stay warm but also to add some playfulness. Try this River Island Side Split Maxi Skirt by ASOS with these Snowflake Patter Knit Tights by Chic Wish for some holiday cheer! As for keeping warm up top, I like to wear a cropped top sweater to keep a slim silhouette. But if you're going for the boho look, you can also wear a long knit pullover or cardigan, like this Fashionista.

Maxi dresses and skirts are also great pieces to wear for a winter night out or a holiday event. Opt for a metallic look for the holidays, like this River Island Chelsea Girl Metallic Lace Maxi Skirt by NASTY GAL. Try it out with a pair of low booties and a fitted top—maybe even a bodysuit for those adventurous Fashionistas. You'll stand out at that New Year's Eve party and bring in the new year with a fabulous look!
