One of my own must-haves and a piece that I think everyone should own is a utility jacket. It’s part menswear, part borrowed from the army and is the perfect way to add a little edge to an every day outfit. This week’s Fashionista incorporated this staple piece into an awesome fall ensemble.
The armed forces have supplied a bounty of inspiration for the runway year after year in the form of cargo pants, camouflage, and epaulettes. My favorite spin on the look is definitely the utility jacket. The jacket is boxy, oversized and infinitely versatile. It is one of the favorite pieces of some stylish celebrities as well, including Kate Bosworth and Sienna Miller. This stylish student played it casual by pairing her jacket with dark skinny jeans, motorcycle boots and infinity scarf. The olive shade acts as a neutral but contrasts gorgeously with her auburn hair.
One of the best things about the army jacket is it is so easy to pair with almost any outfit. Roughen up a floral dress with some olive drab and motorcycle boots for a little 90’s grunge. It would look surprisingly awesome over sequins and skinny jeans. Bright colors would work as well since the olive acts as a neutral. Have no fear when pairing your army jacket! Another plus with this type of jacket almost every brand has their own spin on the style, so they are available at any price point. I love this longer parka from BDG that includes a detachable hood for those rainy days. This one by Topshop includes faux leather sleeves and is a nice alternative to the basic utility style. I also love this simple one that is both cute and super affordable.
Army inspired fashion is constantly resurfacing, and the utility jacket will always be in style. It is a functional way to stay warm and add a little “borrowed from the boys” edge to your outfits. So be sure to pick up your own utility jacket and incorporate a bit of military-chic into your wardrobe.
