STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tribal Fever

Style Advice of the Week

There’s no escaping the tribal tidal wave that has flood the streets and retail stores this season. The fun and eccentric prints give the perfect pop to a summer outfit. When I saw the increasing popularity of this trend last spring I couldn’t help but to flashback to the younger years when our wrists were stacked with colorful friendship bracelets. Now, nearly ten years later, I’m scrambling through old jewelry boxes looking for my tribal fix.

I spotted this week’s Fashionista on her way to grab a bite to eat and couldn’t get over her use of printed accessories. The tribal printed bucket bag and penny loafers paired with her tee and jersey skirt gave her an overall cool, casual look. Naturally, I was curious as to where she found such unique pieces. Turns out, this Fashionista recently traveled to Nicaragua and snagged these great accessories while there. It is always great to have one-of-a-kind items like these in your possession. However, I’ve found a super on trend tribal bag from J.Crew that is ideal for an on-the-go day. Another option I came across is from Nasty Gal; this bucket bag is equally trendy and more college budget friendly.  As for the shoes, check out these espadrille loafers covered with bright tribal designs.

The great thing about this trend is that you have many options on how to pull it off. This Fashionista dove right in and accessorized with bold eye-catching pieces. If you’re still dipping your toes into the tribal water, reverting back to stacking your old friendship bracelets is still a great option if you’re lucky enough to find them.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tribal Fever

Style Advice of the Week

When the weather turns warmer, certain trends come out that are only suitable for these sun-filled days; one of these trends is tribal print. In the past, tribal prints were produced in acid hues  — but times and colors, have changed. Now designers are producing brightly colored and bold colored tribal prints. Designers have been sending clothing and accessories down the runways that offer a modern twist on these South American and African inspired prints. I love the fun and funky texture that these prints add to every outfit. And they are so easy to incorporate into an outfit or to use as a palette for starting an awesome outfit! These prints are perfect to carry you from spring into summer.

This Fashionista is rocking a tribal inspired outfit that is a trendy choice for spring. Her Billabong cropped tank is loose and breezy, perfect for the hot weather. Its subtle color brings out the white tribal pattern. She also rocks a bold color in her bright blue shorts by Hudson. Her jewelry is also tribal inspired, with a bracelet from PacSun and necklace from Urban Outfitters. Her wedges are neutral and do not distract from the outfit, but still add a trendy touch. There are so many fun ways to wear tribal print. You can pair a solid colored tank with tribal patterned shorts. I love the Tribal Print Denim Shorts from dELiA*s. If you do not want to flaunt tribal print in your clothing choice, pair a simple outfit with lots of tribal accessories, like the Neon Tribal Drawstring from Alloy or the Decree Tribal-Print Earrings from JCPenney!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tribal Fever

Uncategorized

The prevalence of diverse cultures in India has given rise to various trends in fashion. Though, I believe this trend is noticeable not only in India. International designers are beginning to take inspiration from different cultures and values as well. People here love to blend the traditional with the global, be it accessories, scarves or bags. As I was walking through campus, the multifarious mix of traditional and classic caught my eye. This Fashionisto makes a strong fashion statement with his swank tribal jacket. The atypical traditional motif is what makes it so exceptional. Not only do I love the juxtaposition of smart and trendy seen in this look but I also adore the break in color monotony. He has added a dose of tribal fever to his otherwise simple outfit with the classy white print. Breaking or pepping up your ensemble with one classy element or powering your look by infusing a little color is the key to head-turning fashion.

All in all, I believe fashion in true sense is nothing but redefining your own style and standing out. So, take inspiration from your surroundings or your city and inject ethnicity in your outfits. It could be in the form of accessories like bags, shoes, belts from ALDO or just by opting for ethnic woven pants from Forever 21. If you’re going bold with your accessories or prints make sure you keep the other elements subtle.  If you want to achieve an avant-garde look or do something eccentric then take inspiration from Egyptian paintings or Warli paintings and hand craft stoles or jackets with a modern bent to it. So this season why not use these as your statement accessories and give people something to talk about?

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tribal Fever

Uncategorized

Tribal prints have been everywhere this year. From dresses, to tops, to pants-tribal prints have been one of the hottest trends this summer. While crazy patterns and bright colors are great for summer parties and daytime looks, this Fashionista shows how to wear the tribal trend while still looking chic and sophisticated. Her one-shoulder black and white top still has a fun tribal print, but by pairing it with dark jeans and black sandals, she takes the trend from party to polished. A top like this Fashionista's is a great investment because it can be worn all year round. For the rest of summer and into the first warm weeks of fall, take a cue from this Fashionista and pair the top with shorts or jeans. To take this look into the cooler months, add a blazer and black boots.

Hint: To get a polished tribal print top like this Fashionista’s, try this one from shopmamie.com. Shopmamie is an online boutique with great one-of-a-kind pieces, but the best thing about it is everything on the site is under $100! (Be sure to subscribe to their website to get updates on new items.) Trends come and go, but because the top is black and white and not a bright summer color or distinctive pattern, it can carry you through many seasons (even when tribal prints aren’t “in” anymore).
