STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: To The Max

Style Advice of the Week

The minimalistic maxi, in colors like black or muted gray, is practically a complete outfit in and of itself. Small details like hem line, neck line, and subdued patterns can make a huge impact while still looking effortless. It’s a low maintenance, relaxed look that is comfortable enough to ensure high-functionality as a busy student. It’s capable of being thrown on when it’s warm out or layered with a cropped jacket and a scarf for the fall.

Hive and Honey’s striped maxi dress is available in black or a faded pink. Small stripes are the perfect pattern to give this look a pinch of dynamism without going over the top. White and Warren’s gray rayon maxi has the perfect amount of extra fabric that won’t look too over the top. The layering gives the look of a two-piece outfit and also serves the visual purpose of a belt by breaking the dress into two parts at the waist. Charlotte Russe’s black maxi experiments with the high-low hem, capable of being dressed up or down with jeweled sandals or flip flops respectively. Gap’s T-shirt maxi is made of comfortable spandex and is available in a comfortable faded gray. The T-shirt cut is preppy and a great transitional piece for the fall with its capped sleeves and scoop neckline.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: To The Max

Style Advice of the Week

The talk about hemlines on skirts and dresses is always buzzing in the fashion world and this spring and summer has been no exception. Maxi dresses have been recirculating for a few seasons now and they are still one of the hottest looks for a cool summer night.

This Fashionista was spotted in her fold-over maxi skirt and button down tank, a simple ensemble that she spices up with a neon satchel and an assortment of bangles and bracelets. Maxi dresses are often found roaming the streets but a maxi skirt is more unique and harder to spot. By maintaining an overall simple look, this Fashionista allows the maxi skirt to work its magic and give the illusion of height and length while wearing flats. She incorporates a few other trends into her look as well — adding a neon bag with mixed and matched bangles for well-placed pops of color. Her overall look is simple but very fashion forward, incorporating multiple trends in a well-balanced manner.

If you want to try this look yourself, do not be afraid to take your hemline to the max. Find yourself a staple like this black jersey knit maxi skirt, and pair it with a simple top and fun, bright accessories.  If you want more of a challenge, opt for this black and white striped maxi, which pairs well with a white top and colorful accessories. To incorporate another trend altogether, go bold with this navy blue high-low hemmed maxi with a simple white top for balance and gold jewelry to complete the look. Even though a maxi makes a statement on its own, do not be afraid to incoporate fun accessories, colors and graphics, which will not only make a statement, but a public announcement.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: To The Max

Style Advice of the Week

Now that we have finally seen a streak of sunny spring days, one would think that choosing an outfit for class, a weekend getaway or a night out with friends would be a cinch. However, the winds have picked up in the North and when walking past the leaf blower man or getting caught in the gusts from a Cruiser passing by, that cute little sundress will no longer be your friend. What is a girl to do to look feminine and flirty without having technical difficulties with her favorite flowy mini dress or skirt? The solution is simple: maxi-mize.

The maxi dress is one of the hottest spring/summer trends for this year, and has been widely displayed down the runways and in storefront windows all over the country. This Fashionista nails the cool and casual look of a May afternoon with her brightly patterned ankle-length dress.  Maxis with loud prints steal the spotlight of the outfit, so avoid over-accessorizing. Her beige straw sunhat and camel sky-high wedges are perfect additions that complement the dress without cluttering the look.

Splendid has a fabulous line of maxi dresses and skirts that are so soft and cozy, you’ll never want to wear anything else. Most of the skirts come in solid colors, allowing you to get creative with a fun scarf, denim jacket or a statement necklace. The best part about many of their long skirts is the fold-over at the top. By unfolding the flap, the skirt becomes even longer and your simple maxi skirt is transformed into a tube maxi dress. This versatility just adds to the fabulousness of the maxi and why it is one of this season’s favorite items.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: To The Max

Style Advice of the Week

The start of a new semester brings about many changes. Students return to campus after the rush of the holiday season, adjust to a new class schedule and face the bitter January weather. One thing that you Fashionistas can rely on, however, is a classic maxi dress to transform your winter wardrobe. The maxi dress appeared on the runways with the revival of the '70s trends and remains popular with the coming seasons. This winter is all about experimenting with hemlines and the maxi dress is a perfect way to start. What makes the maxi dress such a great piece is its versatility as seen with this Fashionista I spotted on campus. Her use of layering shows how she made this trend her own.

Maxi dresses can be so easily transitioned through the seasons and trends. This Fashionista is wearing a jersey maxi dress from Anthropologie paired with an oversized sweater from J.Crew. The combination of a maxi dress, which is usually considered a summer staple and a warm winter sweater makes for a look that is totally fresh for the colder weather.

Staying warm in the winter is all about layering to brace the elements and the maxi is a perfect blank canvas. The maxi dress looks great on any body type so any one can throw one on and look instantly and effortlessly chic, making this item essential to a Fashionista’s closet. This week’s Fashionista prepared for a cold day of walking around campus with a sweater, big brown boots and tights under her long skirt. If she threw on a leather jacket, chunky wedge heels and scarf instead, she would have a perfect look for nighttime. Maxi dresses are so easy to find in stores like Forever 21 and come in many different silhouettes, fabrics, and patterns so they can always match your own personal style. These trends are definitely worth trying out and utilizing your own creativity to make your own statement. With the cold weather, its time to drop the hemlines and embrace the maxi dress!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: To the Max

Style Advice of the Week

Class is finally in session here at UC Davis, and the first week of classes gives students the opportunity to sport their best new outfits and make good, lasting impressions on their peers. I am sure most of the Fashionistas/os on campus enjoyed some serious back-to-school shopping, but lets not forget, we are still in a bad economy and facing fee hikes every year. That being said, it is smart to fill your wardrobe with multifaceted pieces that can last you through the seasons. Filling your closet with pieces like these is wallet-friendly and extremely convenient. One such article of clothing is the maxi skirt. This style of skirt is extremely versatile and can be a wardrobe staple come summer and fall.

Long skirts were once thought of as old-fashioned or granny-ish, but they have burst back onto the fashion scene, becoming a huge trend to follow this season. When browsing for this trend online, I found the most amazing selection at Shopbop and, as expected, was not let down by Forever 21.

Maxi skirts are the ultimate comfort piece, so you'll definitely want to pair with a casual top. In college, we sit in class for anywhere from one to four hours, so comfort is definitely important when choosing an outfit for the day. You can create a relaxed, carefree look by pairing the skirt with cute sandals, a simple top and a big floppy hat. Or you can toughen up your look by pairing the skirt with a leather jacket and serious chunky jewelry. LuLu’s offers the maxi skirt is many different textures, styles and prints. This Fashionista’s look is a very chic and casual way to attend class. By tucking her top into the skirt, she creates definition at her waist, and the high placement of the skirt creates the look of extremely long legs. The skirt also has more going on than what first meets the eye. We see a long back skirt that is also covered by a sheer black layer, which gives the skirt an ethereal feel and some excitement.

Even though maxi skirts are extremely long, most of them end at a point on the legs that allows for any type of shoe to be worn on display. Like with this Fashionista, flats can be the shoe of choice, but lace-up booties or wedges are also perfectly acceptable and fashionable options. Whichever outfit theme you choose, it is good to know this skirt will stay fashionable and comfortable throughout the school year!
