STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ‘Tis the Season

Style Advice of the Week

Classes have ended, final exams are here and the most wonderful time of the year is right around the corner! Heading home for the holidays is always full of excitement as we look forward to all the Christmas festivities with family and friends. These are the wonderful times that give Fashionistas the opportunity to dress up in their favorite holiday apparel while going to family events and other social gatherings. My advice is not to just focus your style eye on your festive dress, and then cover it up with that big winter jacket that doesn’t go with anything. Outerwear is one of the best things about winter fashion that can be easily overlooked as you rush out of the house and grab the same puffy coat everyday. So what exactly is one thing that you should have on your Christmas list this year? The perfect winter jacket!

A winter coat is often the first and last thing others see you in, so it pays to choose wisely. When looking for a coat, it is important to keep in mind how versatile it can be in transitioning from daytime to evening plans. One tip that today’s Fashionista demonstrates in her outerwear ensemble is focusing on the fit of the jacket. She wears the classic black and white tweed print in a button-down coat from 344. The style of the jacket accentuates the pattern with a high-waisted fit. The cinched in waist adds a chic appeal to her appearance that can be worn to a family Christmas gathering, and easily transformed into a night on town with friends from home. Along with the defined waist, the loose mid-thigh cut delivers elegance to her look that is perfect for pairing with your favorite skinny pants and tall boots.

If you want to Christmas shop for a winter jacket similar to this Fashionista’s, try this alice + olivia high-waisted coat found on Polyvore. For a loose fitted look, you can try this swing coat with a flare from ASOS. Or if you are looking for the classic peacoat, check out this grey toned jacket from Forever 21. This is the best style to find in a variety of colors that you can bring back on campus with you.

So Fashionistas, ‘tis the season to find the perfect jacket that’s the right fit for you!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ‘Tis the Season

Style Advice of the Week

This Fashionista is wearing this (holiday) season’s hottest trend! Christmas or festive holiday sweaters are an absolute must for this time of year. They capture the essence of the season and all the great times to be had with family and friends. These sweaters are no longer solely reserved for the older generations in the family. In fact, we could take note and maybe even a sweater or two from them. They can make just about anyone smile and remind us what the holidays are all about. Keeping warm is also a pro to this trend, and festive sweaters can take care of that job with their bulky knit materials.

Keeping her outfit to a minimum, this Fashionista is letting her sweater do all the talking. Since these sweaters are notorious for being over the top and busy, there is no need to over do the rest of your look. Pairing your sweater with some great black leggings is all that is required. This look is the ultimate cozy attire for any chilly day on campus. The one other little touch she added to her look are her shoes. Continuing with the festive look, this Fashionista is rocking a cute pair of red ballet flats. It brings out the bits of red in her holiday sweater, but is not too matchy-matchy.

Hats off to this Fashionista for taking something a little risqué (not the bad kind) and making it into an everyday look. Holiday sweaters are great for Christmas/holiday parties, class, lounging around and now, just about anything. You just have to keep the rest of your look simple and wah-lah.

‘Tis the season to rock a holiday sweater.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ‘Tis The Season

Style Advice of the Week

Could January have gone by any faster? Leading us into February, winter is finally here. For some stylish students, it’s all about layering, leather boots and warm coats. Although for this winter, I knew there would be some ways to subtly tweak an outfit.

This unisex Christmas sweater trend has been appearing more frequently this season. It’s always so fascinating to see everyone wear '80s patterned, vintage sweaters — a complete time warp if you ask me. Additionally, I knew my first featured Fashionisto had to be one that made a bold statement. This Kentucky native added a special touch to his ensemble. With his multi-colored striped sweater, he paired pastel slacks and a gridded button-down shirt. As If his ensemble didn’t have enough character, this Fashionisto wore a pair of high, colored socks with some worn-looking ankle boots. Clearly he knows how to manage a casual but sharp vintage look.

Many might find it difficult to incorporate this trend into their style and daily look, but don't be afraid to mix and match. These sweaters are just like any other and can be paired with jeans and slacks for men, or leggings and skirts for women. Holiday patterns are everywhere. For males, try this wool V-neck from Polo Ralph Lauren, and for women, try this scoop neck knit; both definitely add some color to an outfit. Even though the festivities are done, embrace the holidays this season!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ‘Tis the Season

Style Advice of the Week

‘Tis the season to feel obligated to be with people you really don’t want to be with! They are called family. I am sure you are completely burnt out right now with the arbitrary pleasantries with your relatives. However, I am also sure you are committed to at least another family festivity between now and the new year. And while it may be normal for Grandma Agatha, Aunt Gertrude or some other stereotypically-named family member to wear a frumpy sweater and Dockers, it does not mean you have to go down that way.

The solution? The sweater dress. The sweater dress is a versatile, cozy, appropriate yet appealing choice for a family function. This week's Fashionista shines in a tunic-style sweater from Express circa 1990 borrowed from her mom’s closet. The perfectly chipper shade of Christmas red, black tights and rugged brown boots all come together for a comfortable and stylish appearance at any merry gathering. After all, while you want to be put-together, you obviously do not want to be wearing your skin-tight American Apparel dress around the extended family — that would be awkward.

There are so many different styles and colors of sweater dresses so you can choose one for every uncomfortable family function you have to look forward to! You can select a slim cut, lightweight option or a chunkier, cable knit fashion sure to make you feel warm and confident. A sweater dress with a practical flat boot can work for class or errands, but you can also dress the outfit up with a cute bootie or pump for a night out. The typically understated look of these pieces allow for styling with warm-weather accessories or stand-out jewelry to give them a pop.

Needless to say, these functional wardrobe staples are not limited to eating fruitcake with your cousins. There are endless possibilities when wearing these dresses that will help get you through the family dinner table and the frigid winter alike.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: ‘Tis the Season

Style Advice of the Week

It’s finally Christmas time! 'Tis the season for burning your tongue on multiple cups of hot cocoa, stringing lights on every tree in the frigid cold (that is if you reside in Pennsylvania), a family outing to the local Christmas tree lot and an array of “ugly” sweater parties. I’m sure you have all attended one of these soirées and ventured out to Good Will to find the perfect Christmas paraphernalia induced sweater. Whether it resembles your great aunt’s Santa sweater, equipped with ribbons and jingle bells, or your grandpa’s Rudolph shirt with 3-D, flashing red nose, it’s hard to find an “ugly” Christmas sweater that can be worn through out the season. When I spotted this Fashionista making her way to the Hillman for a 24-hour study session, I discovered the perfect solution to making an “ugly” sweater cute.

This week’s Fashionista showed her Christmas spirit in a thrifted, “ugly” sweater. Although this wool top doesn’t scream Christmas, the red, green and frosty blue hues make this a great alternative to the literal Christmas party look. Turquoise denim, Oxford boots and a knee-length parka complement the sweater’s bold design brilliantly. Finishing the look off with a faux pearl and gold necklace, this Fashionista added just the right amount of femininity to balance the quirkiness of the top.

A sweater in itself is an imperative piece for any Fashionista’s wardrobe during the chilly winter season. Whether you’re enjoying the sunset outside of your California dorm in your cozy cowl neck or bundled up in a cashmere sweater under your parka and knit scarf here in Pittsburgh, sweaters are key to looking chic while taking on reduced temperatures.

To bring this Fashionista’s fun aesthetic to your upcoming Christmas gathering or everyday look, try pairing this black and white pullover with a pair of blood red skinny jeans. Add some chunky, heeled boots and a stone pendant necklace to amp up the hidden sex appeal that every sweater should possess.  Check out the Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal line for the perfect “ugly” Christmas sweater.

Ode to the warm and fashionable.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tis the Season

Uncategorized

The sidewalks are covered with an array of colors and students are stacking on the layers. Despite this ebb and flow of sunny days and less than frigid nights we have to accept that the seasons are changing. Within a few days long sleeves, beanie hats and scarves will be a necessity. If you haven’t already start pulling out the clothes you stocked away for summer and grab your favorite cardigan. It’s time to accept that 60-degree weather will no longer be the norm.
This young Fashionisto stood out for his bold red button-down cardigan and laid back demeanor. With headphones on and black-rimmed glasses I meekly introduced myself hoping he would oblige my request. In a matter of minutes I got my shot and left with a tinge of jealousy- I wanted it. I love the feeling of an over-sized button down and almost knee-grazing cardigan, and the warmth of a sweater to cocoon myself in. My motto is the “go for colors and crazy patterns”. There will be a select few naysayers who will scoff and mutter, “ hipster”, under their breath as you walk by. There will be those who will snicker when you reference your adoration and excitement for a quality Cosby sweater. But remember that fashion isn’t about mere acceptance; it’s about fun, inspiration, and being true to yourself. So if that comes in the form of a fabulous/hideous cardigan or sweater, stand tall with your head held high. It doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks.
Start off slow with a sharp fitted heather grey button-down cardigan from Obey.  Ease into a crewneck sweater from N4E1 then plunge into YMC Fairilse Shawl Collar Cardigan from ASOS. To find the ultimate gem stop by your local thrift store or Salvation Army. Good luck hunting.
