STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Knitty Gritty

Style Advice of the Week

The beginning of November signifies an assortment of feelings: Excitement for the sight of punchy orange and yellow leaves falling off of trees; comfort as we snuggle under our flannel blankets, sipping on warm apple cider; terror as we contemplate how unprepared we are for our upcoming college midterms. However, nothing quite signifies the arrival of the cold weather season like a chunky knitted sweater.

Luckily, with the arrival of the holiday season, a chunky sweater at a retailer is easier to spot than the pink elephant in the room. However, with great assortment comes great responsibility. In choosing a sweater for the season it is important to find an option that you will be able to integrate into your wardrobe. Already feeling the pressure? Have no fear; here I will provide a guide to selecting the perfect sweater for you.

The first step in purchasing a chunky knit is determining the silhouette. There are three main types of chunky sweaters: the open cardigan, the button-down and the open sweater. The featured Fashionista is wearing an open knit cardigan, which works harmoniously with her patterned dress and chic boots. Another option for this type of cardigan would be this one from Nordstrom BP. This sweater is the perfect companion to a cream long sleeve thermal, dark skinny jeans and lace-up leather combat boots. It is the perfect style for a person who is looking for a way to spruce up his or her jeans and tee routine. A similar option to the open cardigan is the button-down cardigan, which comes in a variety of fits, ranging from grandpa to close fitting. The button-down variation is a good selection if keeping away the winter chill is a necessity. An option like this cardigan from Gap would work well over a dress or skirt paired with leggings and an eye-catching scarf. An alternative to these styles is the pullover knitted sweater, like this one sold at PacSun. This option is perfect for the girl who does not like to spend time debating on what to wear, but still strives to look put together. The open cardigan pairs well with black leggings and chic flats to form a style that is both effortless and fashion-forward.

For every occasion thinkable, there is the perfect knitted sweater. The trick to finding your perfect style is to first consider silhouette, then pay attention to colors and embellishments that speak to your inner Fashionista.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Knitty Gritty

Uncategorized

Knitwear is hot- literally and figuratively. In my opinion, a great knitted sweater never gets old and can easily be thrown over a multitude of outfits for a cozy, casual ensemble. An ensemble that’s perfect for those early morning lectures.

This Fashionista sports an awesome oversized knitted sweater. The sweater features a zigzag pattern that alternates a teal bubble knit, oatmeal-colored waffle knit and a blend of the two colors in a chain link pattern. I love the fact that she’s rolled the sleeves up on her sweater to help keep the sleeves from completely engulfing her arms. She’s smartly paired the loosely fitting sweater over a pair of fitted leggings to contribute to a balanced look. This Fashionista also wears a great pair of mountain-ready hiking boots- laces untied. Her fashion-forward laptop case acts as an extra accessory that adds even more richness to her outfit.

To recreate this Fashionista’s look try the BDG Slouchy Cable Knit Sweater from Urban Outfitters matched with these Fleece Knit Leggings from Forever 21. To finish off the look, try these Tan Lace-up Ankle Boots. In addition, this laptop sleeve from ModCloth would be a great item to show off with your knitted sweater outfit.

Hint: Sometimes the best places to find rad knitted sweaters are at thrift shops. Buffalo Exchange tends to have a wide variety of clothes to choose from. The Arc of Tempe is another cool thrift store near campus, not near as big as Buffalo or Goodwill but a place to often find hidden treasures and regularly has special deals reserved only for ASU students.
