Style Advice of the Week

This weekend I was lucky enough to go see the Black Keys and TV on the Radio along with many other bands at the Catalpa Festival on Randall’s Island in NYC. While the weather was less than stellar, spirits were high and people came out decked out in their festival best despite the thunderstorms. As I was bopping around to the tunes of The Aviation Orange, I caught a glimpse of this festival Fashionista over my shoulder. Her look stood out from the throngs of girls in cropped tops and daisy dukes that filled the field. I was instantly drawn to her effortless menswear-inspired look and the way she made the Cambridge satchel look fresh despite its trendiness. Her boots and large brimmed hat were both functional and stylish festival wear.

For a tomboy chic look that is still very feminine like this, start with a great button-down shirt that you won't have to steal from your boyfriend. Try this blue striped shirt from J.Crew or this two-toned striped shirt from Barney's New York CO-OP. Add a pair of slouchy denim cut-off shorts like the boyfriend shorts from American Apparel. Then pull on some leather boots like these from Urban Outfitters or these Frye workboots, which are essential when going to a festival on a rainy day like this weekend. Accessorize with some western-inspired details like a black sunhat, a long beaded necklace from Free People and a turquoise stone ring. What really pulls this menswear-inspired outfit together is this Fashionista's trendy satchel which you can get at The Cambridge Satchel Company. Then finish it all off with a effortless long braid. So ladies, next time you go to a concert or festival ditch the tiny shorts and cropped tops and borrow some styling tips from your boyfriend!
