STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Smitten for Mittens

Style Advice of the Week

Well hello Novemburrrr. Although it’s been chilly up here on Hawk Hill, fashion hasn’t faded just yet. Instead, people have been bundling up in coats, tights, hats and mittens. Mittens are a fun and fashionable way to stay toasty as the temperature drops. Besides, this knit brings back memories of childhood days and bittersweet nostalgia.

But don’t let childhood connotation hold you back from rocking a pair of these cold weather favorites. Designers have been incorporating fashion forward winter knits in runway shows. Designer A-listers, such as Diane Von Furstenberg, focused on chunky knit accessories in her fall 2009 collection as well as Pennsylvania’s own Tory Burch’s fall 2012 knit influenced runway attire. Although, it may not always be apparent, even at our university, runway trends tend to have a trickle-down effect.

At first sight, the Fashionista’s bright purple tights contrasting with her poppy-colored parka caught my eye on this cold and gray day. With a closer look, her chunky knit mittens tucked into her jacket pockets added an amusing piece incorporated into her outfit. She keeps her outfit balanced by wearing a black and white shift dress with black ballet flats with small black bow details on the toes.

Kate Spade is known for her bright colored knits with playful sayings on them such as the “Hi 5” or “Pow Pow” mittens for a burst of color. For a more traditional knit, see Ralph Lauren's Boucle Cabled Mitten. Of course, if you’re truly smitten about mittens, I’m sure they won’t be hard to come across as temperatures start to drop.

So, as you start to add a few cozy knit accessories in preparation for the winter ahead, keep in mind the unconventional and fashionable choice of adding mittens to your look.
