STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Smells Like School Spirit

Style Advice of the Week

It doesn’t matter if you’re wrapping up your first or your last semester as a college student, school spirit is something that will stay with you forever. Here at UNCW we dedicate our Tuesday’s to wearing teal. “Teal Tuesday’s” for some consist of throwing on a UNCW T-shirt and putting your hair up in a messy bun. Today’s Fashionista, however, wears her teal proudly while staying professional and put together.

The sheer shirt is simple and classic, but the teal color gives it a fresh twist. Following the trend if incorporating blues into your wardrobe this Fall, Today’s Fashionista showed  off her school spirit in style. Choosing to wear a tank top underneath of the shirt allows the top to remain professional and class appropriate. You can also take this outfit outside of the classroom by wearing it to a tailgate or other school event. Just think of how cute you’ll look in something other than a screen-printed T-shirt from the bookstore while you support your school!

Take this look from day to night and swap out your denim for a pair of black skinny jeans, or be bold and try a pair of leather leggings from TopShop. The sheer texture of the shirt and the metallic leather will create the perfect contrast. Change out of your leather daytime boots for a pair of Jeffery Campbell Lita’s, or if you stray away from heels try a pair of black combat boots.

School spirit doesn’t necessarily mean monotony. When you’re shopping be sure to keep your schools colors and activities in mind. Keep your eyes open in thrift stores for unique pieces and remember that it’s never too early to start shopping for the perfect pair of heels to wear with your cap and gown.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Smells Like School Spirit

Style Advice of the Week

Few schools have had as many songs written about their colors as Wake Forest University. From Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” (alright, if were getting into specifics this song was not actually written about Wake Forest per say) to our very own fight song which includes the lyrics “Rah, Rah, Wake Forest, Rah- Old Alma Mater sons are we- We'll herald the story and die for her glory- Old Gold and Black is ever waving high” everyone seems to love the pairing of black with gold.

Can you blame them? The stark contrast of black with the beautiful sheen of gold is undeniably eye catching. Previously reserved for sporting events and organized displays of school pride, rocking your school colors year round has never been more chic. Even major designers caught the spirit of the Old Gold and Black last spring, sending handfuls of Wake Forest colored looks down their menswear runways. Philip Lim 3.1? Obviously, his perfectly tailored black suit was juiced up with a pop of gold silk. J. Crew? Of course, staying true to their effortlessly luxe aesthetic with gold slim khakis, topped off with a beautiful black wool coat. Wake Forest University Bookstore? Naturally, showing a set of crave-worthy stripe overalls.

This Fashionisto makes overt displays of school spirit look natural and casual. His butter yellow oxford, layered under a supple black V-neck sweater plays with classic menswear staples in a fresh way. Coupled with dark denim and neutral suede desert boots, his outfit looks put together and streamlined. Incorporating gold and black pieces into your fall daily wardrobe is easy compliments of the internet and wonders of online shopping (whoever invented that concept deserves a raise). Try wearing this yummy shawl collar cardigan over a white tee and pairing with gold toned khakis, or this shamelessly warm check flannel with dark jeans and a gold buckled belt.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Smells Like School Spirit

Uncategorized

NYU is not exactly the most school spirited place. I for one have not attended one school athletic event and the closest thing we have to a campus quad is Washington Square Park. Not to mention I've heard people describe their experience here as, 'Living in New York City and happening to take classes at NYU.' This attitude is reflected in the student body and the fashion they choose and you rarely see many people sporting our colligate violet.

This Fashionisto shows that representing the Violets (or Bobcats if you want) doesn't mean you have to veer from subtlety or personal style. What stood out to me most is the fact that he wore his NYU shirt underneath a plaid flannel, which, to me, seems as if it is  the go to piece for so many (maybe even too many) students who roam the Village. That made this outfit seem just so quintessentially NYU to me. I also like the little touches he added like his clubmaster sunglasses, loafers and dark jeans that keep the outfit interesting.

While I love this look that is not to say that a violently violet sweatshirt can't be a cute way to show school spirit. Old school inspired colligate wear such as a crew sweatshirt or a vintage inspired NYU T-shirt are my favorite way to wear NYU apparel.
