STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Stripes

Style Advice of the Week

Stripes and polka-dots are two of those patterns that never go out of style. They’re simple, sophisticated and the perfect pick-me-up for a day when you’re not feeling too glam. Two of the Fashionistas I photographed previously rocked big bold polka-dots and micro polka-dots, so it’s time I pay tribute to all the stripes in our lives. Stripes have been seen all over the runway and are sure to be trending for the Spring. Stripes were front and center in collections by Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs and Dolce & Gabbana. Stripes were seen in every fashion — minimal, eccentric and monochromatic.

This week’s Fashionista styled a blue and white blouse buttoned to the top with dark skinny jeans and a flannel-lined coat (love the pattern mix!). Vertical stripes are a current favorite of mine; the stripes elongate my petite figure, which is never a bad thing. I love this bodycon dress from Motel, and would style it with bold lips, strappy black heels and a faux fur coat. The simplest way to style stripes is pairing one piece and leaving the rest of your look simple—a striped tank top with black high-waisted trousers and stilettos, a striped dress with minimal accessories or striped pants with a solid top are all ways to style stripes. That being said, don’t stray from mixing stripes with other patterns as well! Refer to the article I previously wrote on pattern mixing and get creative! One of my favorite striped items right now is this vertical striped dress; it would look so chic with minimal heels, a blazer and a ballerina bun. And, of course, some pouty red lips!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Stripes

Style Advice of the Week

At Oscar de la Renta’s spring/summer 2013 show at New York Fashion Week runways a couple of weeks ago, there were plenty of memorable pieces. However, one of the most eye-catching and talked about is a floor length white and black boldly striped dress.  There’s no denying it – stripes are in. Whether they're thick and blocklike, or thin and nautical inspired, stripes in all colors, sizes and shapes are being splashed across runways (and throughout stores), making them a must have for this fall (and according to Oscar de la Renta, next spring!)

While some daring Fashionistas are mixing stripes, there’s something tried and true about a classic striped top and denim. In some of the last few days of warmth on campus, today’s Fashionista is embracing the temperatures and rocking a basic pair of dark denims shorts. On top, a white three quarter sleeve top with thin navy stripes gives the basic ensemble a nautical feel while embracing the stripe trend. Like her outfit, she keeps her accessories basic: a white watch, a gold bracelet, brown sunglasses and ended at her feet with a navy pair of sandals with a gem detailing. This outfit is all about basics that incorporate subtle details – thin stripes, minimal accessories and small gems.

If you’re looking to stock up on your stripe basics, the first place to start is with a boat neck striped T-shirt. This two-toned top from J.Crew incorporates stripes in a new, fresh way, rather than simple patterns. However, if you are looking for the classic shirt, try this one by Vince paired with your dark-wash denim or your favorite pair of shorts, it’s sure to be a hit.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Stripes

Uncategorized

This spring semester brings many college students a lot to look forward to including days at the beach, graduation, summer plans, and of course all the trends that follow warmer weather.

When I spotted this Fashionisto, I was excited to see his nautical inspired outfit against the melting snow. From Dolce & Gabbana’s floral prints and minimalist and nautical inspired looks from Salvatore Ferragamo’s spring 2011 collection, men’s fashion is paying attention to cues from women’s fashion trends.

Nautical inspired clothing will be a big trend for this spring, but that doesn’t mean you have to pull out your sailor hats and eye patches just yet. Instead, opt for a quieter statement while still being on trend with stripes. Stripes offer a fun and effortless way to liven up any wardrobe.

This Fashionisto proved that a swashbuckling look à la Johnny Depp can be chic and can be worked through both fall and spring wardrobes. By pairing this monochromatic cardigan from Dillard’s with his striped V-neck tee from Pacsun, his look was fresh and allowed his stripes to shine through with an unexpected surprise. I always love seeing leather boots on guys, and this Fashionisto’s choice in boots were a great mix of tough biker meets military chic. Today’s Fashionisto finished his look by tucking his jeans into these boots from Aldo.

With the nautical trends for this season, you don’t have to settle for looking like a shipwrecked sailor. As with all trends, try to find pieces that stay true to your style and fit into your existing wardrobe. To make stripes pop out like this fashionisto’s, stick with neutral colored accessories and choose one piece to focus the attention on. Try a bright colored striped tee like this one from Pacsun for a quick update to your springtime attire.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Stripes

Uncategorized

This past 4th of July weekend, stars and stripes were not only waving on American flags but also worn by many Fashionistas. Stripes can be worn many different ways from a flowly top to a pair of pinstripe pants, or an allover dress like this Fashionista. She took a purple striped dress, clipped on red drop earrings, and added cool neon-strapped sandals.  When wearing a striped dress, mix it up with a wavy pattern like this dress from Forever21. Stripes do not have to be vertical or horizational; wearing different designs with non traditional colors adds variety! If you want a fresh summertime spin on classic stripes, try taking a striped T-shirt and pairing it with another print pattern like this skirt. I love the two completely different patterns coming together for one outfit. Not to mention that a bright, red bag is a great finishing touch. This look is a staple of my summertime outfits!

Hint: If you're looking for the perfect shoes for your striped-out outfit, try boots like this. Wearing boots in the summertime is an unexpected twist to any outfit!
