STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Style Advice of the Week

I spotted this Fashionista a mile away. This time of year we are surrounded by festive lights, holiday décor and of course the obvious color combo of red and green. So what better way to embrace the holidays than to rock the most festive color of all?

This Fashionista’s bright red peacoat is the perfect piece for a chilly day in Radford. With temperatures around the twenties in the mornings and even colder at night, you need a good coat. Her style says, “I want to keep warm, but I will be stylish while doing so”. Red is a color that looks good on just about everyone. It brightens up your complexion, and for this Fashionista, it makes her blue eyes pop. It is safe to say you cannot go wrong with red. It’s fun and catches the eyes of by passers—it’s always a good thing to stand out from the crowd.

Keep it simple with a pair of dark denim jeans and black boots. Your red coat will be the center of your outfit. It does not need to be competing with the rest of your look. Accenting her red peacoat with a classic houndstooth scarf adds to her already simply chic look. Scarves complete a look and are the perfect final touch to your winter wardrobe.

“When in doubt, wear red.”- Bill Blass. This famous quote from the legendary designer Bill Blass says it all. Any day could be made into a fabulous one with a touch of red.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Style Advice of the Week

Finally, the weather has cooled down in Long Beach and we can all trade in our cut off shorts and cropped tops for long pants and boyfriend sweaters. I couldn’t be more excited to dive into fall after a very long summer in Southern California. The sudden rain shower has left everyone on campus to quickly pull together a weather-appropriate outfit.

This season there is no reason to be afraid of color anymore. This past summer we were bombarded with mint-green denim and leggings in all different kinds of funky patterns. This winter, it’s all about colored denim. Colored denim is just what we need this fall. They are an easy way to integrate a new trend into your wardrobe that, in the right shade you can wear throughout winter.

This Fashionista makes a bold statement in red jeans, a flowing camouflage top and blazer with shoulder pads. Her pants remain the focal point with the other neutral pieces. I love this blazer because the shoulders are exaggerated without being cartoonish. The eye is brought up and out then brought back to the middle where she is wearing a stacked, chain necklace. This Fashionista chose pieces that are interesting on their own and that when brought together, create a look that is sure to impress. The sheen on her boots is a perfect compliment to the bright hue of her pants. This Fashionista’s Prada sunglasses are also on point this season. I love that they have a definite cat eye to them but they are not overly trendy.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Style Advice of the Week

The weather’s cooler, the days are shorter and everyone’s wardrobe is getting darker. While we all love bright colors and bronzed skin, it’s time to trade them in for deeper hues and porcelain complexions (and if you know me, you know I’m not complaining). And while we Floridians have to patiently wait for our short-lived winter to wear our favorite jackets and boots, at least we can follow season appropriate color transitions within our ensembles.

This week’s Fashionista begins her look with a simple white tank. She pairs the top with a lovely, scarlet chiffon asymmetrical skirt. She keeps her accessories fun and playful with multiple styles of rings, bracelets, a necklace and an anklet. She completes the look with a camel colored belt and a fabulous pair of camel colored platform heels (daring and impressive for a freshman!). She keeps her beauty routine simple, yet done-up with cat-eye liner and a red lip. She lets her pretty auburn tresses hang loosely at her shoulders.

If you’d like to replicate this Fashionista’s look, find yourself a pretty chiffon skirt in a jewel tone, appropriate for both fall and winter. You can choose an asymmetrical cut like our featured Fashionista, or a maxi. Then pair the skirt with a simple tank or T-shirt and load on the accessories. To wear this look into the cooler months, opt for a cute pair of heeled booties instead of sandals and throw on a cute cardigan, (faux) fur vest or leather jacket. Keep your legs warm with tights or a daring pair of thigh-highs.

STYLE ADIVCE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Style Advice of the Week

Over the past few years there have been numerous studies written that show wearing red not only can garner you more attention, but also makes any Fashionista exude power, strength and intelligence. Basically, wearing red can give you that extra hop in your step, glisten in your eye and can make you walk just a little bit taller when you’re strutting you stuff on your college campus, and who doesn’t want that?

When going with red, go big or go home. This Fashionista dove head first into the color and never looked back. This outfit is sure to turn heads and may just cause a few more people tripping over themselves. The high waistline of this dress, just under the bust, is great for elongating the legs and creating a more flattering silhouette, like this one from ASOS.

When putting together any outfit it’s always important to keep three things in mind: color, patterns, and textures. Each outfit needs the perfect balance of all three to make it a true statement. Boy does this have the color; the pattern on the other hand is achieved through these brightly striped canvas wedges.  The wedges, along with any other heel, elongate your legs and create that hourglass figure along your back, just like the high waistline. The texture is brought in the simple yet effective pleating along the neckline and in the waist of the dress.  As well as in the simplistic accessories, they introducing another texture of the smooth sterling silver, while creating a clean elegant look.  When these three keys are firing on all cylinders a stunning style is sure to follow. Turn heads, take control, and wear red!

NOTE: Wearing red within eyesight of a bull is not recommended by American Medical Association

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Style Advice of the Week

Getting dressed in the morning can become a real struggle when the temperature drops and the only thing on your mind is essays, coffee and the two long weeks until Christmas vacation. This week’s Fashionista was bundled up in cozy but festive pieces and it was almost hard to tell whether she was heading to pick out a Christmas tree or to pick out library books.

Red jeans have been a major trend the past couple of seasons but can be an intimidating piece to wear because of the bright color. Wearing them with an otherwise neutral color palatte makes them standout without too much contrast. This Fashionista makes them decidedly casual and wears them with a J.Crew chambray shirt and Canadian label Aritzia safari jacket. Individually each of these pieces are very trendy items, however she pairs them with a thick knit vintage scarf of her mom’s and cat-eye glasses in tortoiseshell. This is a good combination to pair with any pair of coloured jeans like these from J.Brand

Frye boots are a CollegeFashionista favorite and have been spotted on campuses across the continent. This calf-high style is particularly good to wear with jeans and high socks and the heavy-duty sole is perfect for Montreal weather. She tucks her jeans into classic Roots cabin socks- a standard stocking stuffer for Canadian students. Despite being stuck in a storm of work this week, stay sartorially inspired even if you’re academically strung out!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Red

Uncategorized

A staple in the wardrobe of most Manchester students is the quilted jacket, which is unarguably the undisputed coat of choice for most Fashionistas and Fashionistos. Even the fact that it is now so saturated has not caused its popularity to wane and it is on track to becoming as synonymous with college basics as varsity sweaters and UGG boots. This Fashionista has chosen to stand out from the crowd in a bright red number. The vivid colour demonstrates that whilst she follows trends, she is not afraid to make her own rules.

If it worked for Little Red Riding Hood, it can work for anyone else. A red coat will set you apart from the sea of grey, navy and black and the injection of bright colour is symbolic of the (slowly) coming spring months. This lucky lady is the owner of a genuine Barbour jacket, the brand that pioneered the quilted jacket, transforming it from a farmers’ best friend into a fashion garment. However, many variations are available on the high street at a lower cost. Alternatively, scour charity shops for unwanted quilted-style jackets rejected by Grandmas across the country.

Paired with a relaxed, slouchy knit and lace-up boots, the overall outfit is comfortable and low maintenance. The colour of the jacket, however, makes a statement without encroaching on the practical component. The red lipstick prevents her skin from looking washed out against the intense shade of the jacket and the long gold chain pendant sits well on top of the coarse texture of the jumper.
