The Fourth of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. Growing up we’d go to our city’s Fourth of July Parade, then go home and swim and eat sub sandwiches until the fireworks later at night. This is now the second year that I’ve spent Independence Day weekend away from home, but this year in Kentucky it felt familiar again– eating (too much) and spending the day lounging by the pool with my program friends. Fortunately, familiarity did not breed contempt at this event when it came to style, as today’s Fashionista proves.
My favorite part of this outfit and the focus of this week’s advice is her blue and light gray striped top. I love the cut of the shirt, with its three-quarter sleeves, scoop-neck and billowy bottom. The colors are coincidentally perfect for the Fourth without being too loud. This is a great choice for a day at the pool as it’s loose and easy to throw on. As an added bonus, its thicker material can keep you warm and somewhat dry after swimming. With that in mind, I'm also loving nautical cardigans like this as a beach/pool top. She pairs her top with a pair of jean bermuda shorts that are just the right length and a pair of stellar cream-colored sandals. Very strappy sandals are in style for good reason these days– they dress up a casual outfit and really work as a comfortable but cute alternative to a flip flop. I like this pair in particular for the lace detailing and subtle metallic color. I’d recommend checking out Urban Outfitters if you’re looking for a pair.
Today’s Fashionista completes her look with a hunter green and brown slouchy shoulder bag. The piece gives her look a more urban feel with its gold buckles, darker colors and thicker materials. For those looking for an edgier alternative to the beach canvas bag, this could be the way to go.
