STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Puff, the Magic Jacket

Style Advice of the Week

Walking around campus in the cold is not a fun task, especially with the wind chill blowing right in your face, but thankfully we have coats! Over the years, I’ve been particularly happy with how the designs of jackets and coats have changed. No longer do we belong to the era of bright, shapeless neon ski wear, but now to the sleek designs of wool coats and streamlined parkas. Now among all the possible coats and jackets around campus, what was it about this week’s Fashionista’s jacket that caught my eye? The puffer jacket, known for warmth but also having a boxy shape, has been completely redesigned for something more fashionable.

There are three things I love about this Fashionista’s coat from the Bay: the length, the collar and the belt. The length suits her perfectly. It hits right above the knee, any longer and it would have looked frumpy. Any sign of frumpiness —especially in the winter time—should be eliminated as soon as possible. Secondly, the collar exudes this great high fashion look to it. Because of the exaggerated shape of the collar, wearing a scarf would easily draw attention to it. Finally, the belt. As simple as it is, it creates the whole silhouette of the jacket. The belt cinches in the waist, creating an hourglass figure.

To avoid looking like the Michelin Man, stick with puffer coats that aren’t too “puffy.” When trying on such jacket, you should still be able to see your natural figure without being swallowed up. Uniqlo has an “Ultra Light” down jacket that is perfect for layering and still shows off your shape without making you look frumpy.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Puff, the Magic Jacket

Style Advice of the Week

Most everyone remembers the time when he/she was little and would get bundled up like the Michelin man for winter. Those stiff, bulky, fluffy coats of years past gave down filling a bad name and this Fashionista is a reminder that even fluff can be fashionable.

The trouble with products filled with down (or some other puffy material) is that they can appear quite unflattering on the hanger, but in reality they may not be so colossal. As with any outerwear, Fashionistas should look for a piece with slight shaping in the sides. Bringing the seams in even a tiny bit can make the wearer look slimmer.

Another fun option would be to find a coat with an interesting stitching or quilting instead of the traditional horizontal seams. This coat from Patagonia utilizes an asymmetrical quilt pattern to draw the eye in a different direction and lend shape to the garment.

By far the easiest way to pull off a down jacket is by purchasing one with a belt. The extra bit of length and the cinching of the belt at the waist create an hourglass figure, despite all of the concealing layers. This effect can even be achieved by adding a regular belt to a coat you already own — no need to go out and buy a new one.

What is great about down is that in today’s market, it comes in many different forms and styles. This Fashionista’s coat is a neutral gray tone, which allows her red scarf and yellow sneakers to pop in contrast. She could have reversed it though, and gone with a shocking red North Face jacket and neutral accessories. Designers have gone beyond the basic black and tan coats, coloring them in reds, pinks, blues, and purples. Some consumers still might not feel comfortable in a full down jacket though, so many stores also provide the option of “puffer vests”, which provide the toasty benefits of down in a smaller package. And although this Fashionista looks feminine and pretty in her down jacket, the trend effortlessly transforms to a Fashionisto’s needs too.
