STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty In Punk

Style Advice of the Week

It’s a beautiful thing when the Fashion Gods assist Fashionistas/os in finding each other. There’s just something so powerful about a well-dressed couple. They give off a cool and confident aura that can leave anyone who crosses their paths envious.

This couple really knows how to stay fashionable yet comfortable and appropriate for class. The Fashionisto of the pair went for a denim-on-denim look, which can sometimes be hard to pull off. Since he’s got the Novembeard going on, the look totally works. The Fashionista chose to wear sheer tights and a printed mini dress with a Peter Pan collar. She toughened up the feminine dress with a personalized leather motorcycle jacket, complete with buttons and a hot pink duct tape X on the arm.

This Fashionisto’s look is pretty simple to recreate since you probably already have black Chuck Taylors, dark wash jeans and a denim jacket. Just throw them on with a black hoodie and you’re ready for a casual and relaxed day on campus. For the Fashionista’s look, you will need a dress with a Peter Pan collar. The Kimberly dress by Kate Spade has such a sweet shape and would look so fierce with this BLK DNM leather motorcycle jacket layered on top. This dress by ASOS is another option with a less structured silhouette. The Pierre Balmain motorcycle jacket with the shearling collar would look insane with it, but is pretty unrealistically priced. It can, however, offer up great inspiration for a DIY project.

Although this couple has been blessed by the Fashion Gods, fashionably challenged couples shouldn’t get discouraged. It’s never too late to turn over a new leaf! Start finding the things that make you unique and reflect them through your clothes, but make sure you keep reading CollegeFashionista for style advice, tips and street style inspiration!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pretty In Punk

Style Advice of the Week

This spring season fashion has a real sweet tooth and cotton candy colors have dominated the runway and now are making their way on to the sidewalks of every major city. Designers like Meadham Kirchhoff and House of Holland have been inspired by the punk rock princesses of the ‘90s like Courtney Love (Meadham Kirchhoff even played “Hole” songs during their show) and showed pastel prints, Lisa Frank-inspired colors, frilly dresses, knee-high socks, school girl skirts, cotton candy hair and kooky makeup on the runway. Meadham Kirchhoff’s SS 12 collection is a little extreme for street wear and felt a bit like Care Bears, but elements of the sickly-sweet style of the show can be translated to everyday wear.

When I saw this Fashionista with her neon green hair walking to class on a beautiful spring day, I was immediately drawn to her and “green with envy” at her ability to pull off such an extreme hair color so well. This Fashionista proved that the pretty punk style of the spring season had made it to the college campus and was passing the fashion trend test with flying colors. She wears fabulous leather shorts (a personal favorite clothing of mine) in a daring red shade with a bright blue sweater and a pair of perfectly beat-up lace-up boots. She spices her look up with sparkly black tights that catch your eye and add a little pizzazz to her outfit. For a feminine yet rebellious look like hers, try these red leather shorts from Urban Outfitters, or for a more sophisticated version, try these tailored pastel pink leather shorts from ASOS. You can pair the shorts with a sweater like this Fashionista or a vintage band T-shirt like this one from What Goes Around Comes Around for a causal look for class, or you can pair them with a button-down with an embellished collar like this from Pixie Market for an outfit worthy of a job interview or a night on the town.

I have wanted to dye my hair bright pink or turquoise for a while, but I just haven’t had the guts to do so, but this Fashionista inspired me to seriously think about letting my hair become “pretty in pink.”  Her hair is just the right balance of My Little Pony punk while remaining sophisticated and chic. For those Fashionistas who are not as daring as this Fashionista but want to try the candy-colored hair trend, there is a great new hair product called COLOR.BUG that is a temporary hair dye that you can easily wipe on and wipe off. COLOR.BUG is a “colored hair shadow” in a cute pod that you can apply to your hair like makeup. COLOR.BUG is great for those Fashionistas who want to follow the high definiton hair color trend without the scary commitment. So ladies, remember, dare to (temporarily) dye your hair and pull on a flirty dress with those Dr. Martens because “girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice,” and your style should reflect it.
