STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Poncho-Perfect

Style Advice of the Week

The poncho is a timeless piece that has been tweaked over time, adapting the look to this contemporary era. It originated from the indigenous populations of Southern and Central America due to the prominence and expertise in weaving techniques. Traditionally, both men and women wore it to overcome the damper of nature’s wind and rain. Its popularity has ridden a bumpy rollercoaster through many phases and cultures in history. However, with the evolution of modern fashion, this shapeless, draped piece of woven cloth with only a head opening has established its credibility as a mainstream trend revered by all fashion lovers. Whether it is the introduction of arm slits of the addition of a fur collar, minor alterations to primitive versions of the poncho (which is, nonetheless, still widely admired) has forwarded its current recognition.

This week’s Fashionista was certainly snug and stylish in her very classic poncho. Featuring a Fair Isle pattern to complement the snowy days ahead, this poncho is seasonably relevant too. She wore a knitted head wrap, a crucial winter accessory that conveniently provides further warmth, to finish off the look. And with basic black boots, this Fashionista’s completed ensemble is simply perfect.

Make sure to include the poncho as a must-have of the season in preparation for the maturing frigidity of the year’s end. Wearing a garment that is flawlessly chic while also being remarkably comfortable is essential to avoiding those lazy day outfits of cumbersome sweats. Follow in this Fashionista’s exemplary lead and be sure to have a poncho in your wardrobe this winter.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Poncho Perfect

Style Advice of the Week

New England cannot seem to decide what season it is considering last week’s weather was in the fifties. These recent mornings have consisted of indecisive clothing selections, but one day after class I spotted this Fashionista with the perfect outfit for this weather.

In middle school, my friends and I would set out specific “poncho days” just as an excuse to wear one. Luckily, they have found their way back into style and Navajo and tribal print ponchos seem to be must-haves. This Fashionista mixes the trend with her gray winter inspired poncho, a pair of silver medallion earrings and her favorite chunky heels.

Last fall, Hermès included an array of wool ponchos with dusk neutral tones. I completely fell in love with Issa London’s block poncho — the colors are phenomenal. To get a cutting edge outfit, sport a funky heel and Etro’s sheer paisley poncho

Ponchos are one of the most functional (and stylish) items a girl can have in her closet. Another great attribute is that ponchos are a complete and effortless look, yet they give an edgy touch to every outfit. They are so versatile; one can wear it as a cozy blanket, as a vest or as a layering piece. Because this piece is friendly for any body type, the only minor detail to this item is that one must choose a fit that perfectly accentuate their own body. Some people walk around as if the poncho is swallowing them! One needs to find the correct style that is just right.

Your poncho should hit somewhere between the hips or right below the knees, depending on your height, of course. Make sure that the fabric isn’t too heavy in order to avoid a bulky look. For wet days, add some color with a pair of Hunter Boots. Even wearing a poncho over a dress or skirt creates a sophisticated outfit. Lastly, for a more put together look, belt it at the waist for a more flattering figure and match it with a dark wash skinny jean. The options are absolutely endless, so make sure to be open to this different trend and find a way to make it your own.
