With the end of July and the coming of August, we turn the corner on the warmest months of the years. I know I’m not the only one who is in full pining mode for the days of pre-fall fashion and easy layering in the (hopefully) near future. We’re coming to the turn of another season of shopping and thrifting and runway shows that will herald in new trends to come. But for now? For now we’re stuck still hoping that no one notices how much we’re sweating in our cute dresses and towering heels as we saunter down the sidewalks of whatever city you find yourself in. Here in Chicago, it's been a hot one indeed. Does my phone really say 111 heat index? I’d almost forgotten I was in Illinois and not the sub-tropics! Despite my hopes and dreams, this heat isn’t diminishing; so here we are again with some beat the heat and be chic advice.
Oh the shirt dress, how I find myself lusting after you lately! You have such potential and variety! Pinstripes? Prim and proper and in place. Colorful? Yes. Stone shades? Check. Sheer? Well of course. Button-up? How dare you doubt the diversity! The button-up, more crisp style of T-shirt dresses is where I’m going to focus today. How is it that you style a long, straight piece of clothing without making yourself look like a tent or a box?
The answer is all in the belt! Belt up this style because, hey, even I can admit this trend can go south quickly on a lot of body types if not properly belted. Big, small, average, tall – boxy is just not a thing any girl likes to hear in regards to the way an article of clothing sits on her. Be careful as always with belts – blacks and browns will be your best bets with most colors. If you want to wear white, watch that sheen! Anything white and plastic can err on the cheap-looking side, so you’re much better off going with a matte-finished white belt or just a leather one. Rock belts that hit at your natural waist as well; while belting at hip level with a dress can be cute, I don’t recommend it for this style.
If belts aren't your thing, many dresses come with alternative ways to cinch that waist back in and tame it into a nice, flattering shape. As far as accessories go, rock it simple and minimalistic like this fabulous Fashionista did. Simple sandals or flats and just a few small pieces of jewelry are the perfect way to finish off this scorching temperature-approved look!
