STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Neutrals And Prints

Style Advice of the Week

Most people who consider themselves fashion-minded are overly conscious of footwear. I often find myself staring down when I walk—not because I am avoiding eye contact, but because I am shoe gazing. Sperry Top-Siders are quite a common sight on campus. At first I assumed that people wore these boat shoes in order to convince themselves they were in a land much more nautical that Muncie, Indiana, but now I see them as a sophisticated form of practicality.

Worn with freshly pressed khaki pants, a newly laundered white collar shirt and monogrammed sweater, Sperrys fit the All-American preppy mold that the brand embodies. This Fashionisto puts a twist on the classic Sperrys look with dark pants, a button-down cardigan and pop-of-color scarf. Opt for a pair of well-tailored black pants over the go-to pair of skinny jeans for a more classic, polished look.

As much as it pains me to recommend a shopping spot for sweaters other than Goodwill, Forever 21 stores and online shop a wide, affordable selection. A white button-down is always a great complement.

Among the neutral colors of this Fashionisto’s outfit, the multicolored scarf stands out in a bold, un-tacky way. I have learned through experience how easy it can be to turn from tasteful to tacky when it comes to bold prints. It is best to offset the color with a plain palette and simple, practical shoes. Scarves from Forever 21 and NASTY GAL offer graphic and geometric patterns so you can style yourself with inspiration from this Fashionisto.
