STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up

Style Advice of the Week

Lately, across the country, Fashionistas have been posting and preaching about one thing. We’ve all been talking about layers. And while I’m the first to encourage everyone to mix bold patterns and hues when loading on the layers, I’m the first to call someone out for butchering the look. When making a statement like that with your look, it’s far too easy to take an ensemble from chic to shriek.

This week’s Fashionista is a brilliant example of a laid back, layered look. She begins her ensemble with a black and white plaid shirt. She tucks her top into a pair of high-waisted black shorts, with a fun pair of chevron patterned tights underneath. She matches her brown leather woven belt with a pair of brown, buckled combat boots. She accessorizes with a turquoise pendant, an abundance of eclectic, bright bracelets and a couple of rings.

Our featured Fashionista kept her pattern combination tame by keeping the majority of her outfit in neutral tones. It’s hard to go wrong when mixing neutrals, but if you’re ready for the challenge you should try doing the same with bolder hues. Think it can’t be done? Just check out this Fashionisto from the University of Wisconsin. His look works because it has purpose and a phenomenal color scheme, centered around his key patterned piece, his knit sweater.

To replicate this look, pick a statement piece like a bold patterned top or this year’s street style obsession, leggings with loads of imagery. Once you’ve established your statement piece, just go wild! Pick pieces that will complement it with color, pattern and even texture. As long as your choices have a purpose behind them, you’re sure to look stylish rather than foolish. And if all else fails, stick to a neutral palette. You can’t go wrong!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up

Style Advice of the Week

In my fashion class, I've been learning a lot about how hip patterns are right now. When I spotted this Fashionista, there was no denying her confidence; it's not every day that you see such fun bold patterns being mixed to perfection. Not only does this top offer a great take on the classic polka dot, but mixed with the bright floral shorts, it demonstrates how a simple pattern can be an amazing alternative to a solid.

The accessories are simple, just a few funky bracelets and this pair of amazing handmade Italian sunglasses. Finished off with a pair of neutral suede booties, this Fashionista is making a statement in all the right ways. The modern ankle boot is casual yet stylish and her basic bag, which adds an amazing textural element to the outfit, was found at a small local market. The woven straw is super trendy for summer and is ultra versatile.

Don't be afraid of wild bottoms! Patterned pants, shorts and skirts are everywhere right now. Take a look at these fun patterned pants. Polka dots and stripes can serve as supporting pieces to statement pieces, like an unexpected patterned bottom, so try to find a top that offers a nice texture, such as a glossy silk, to go with your unique shorts or slacks. Finish your look off with a cute ankle boot — they're an extremely fashionable way to get your from point A to point B.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up!

Style Advice of the Week

The days of matching patterns and color combinations are over. Trendsetters everywhere are less concerned with complementing tones and textures, and we are finally able to mix our favorite prints into one eccentric look. Spring collections like Miu Miu and Prada showed off this daring trend and so did this week’s Fashionista!

In her flowing, asymmetrical sundress (another summer 2012 trend) and patterned scarf, this Fashionista proves that she is over her matching phase and ready to be bold! Her all-over volcanic printed dress is light and playful. She adds edge with her grey and black cheetah print scarf making her outfit just a little less innocent. Saying I love this Fashionista’s shoes would be an understatement. These fringe sandals with gold accents give her outfit a little bohemian twist, once again confirming that matching prints, colors and styles are not her thing.

The mix and match trend is one of the easiest trends to wear straight off the runway. It takes very little thought, because pretty much anything goes! I love the subtly printed sundress and the wild animal print scarf that this week’s Fashionista showcased. But I also love the idea of, say, a polka dot tunic with a colored skirt and your printed Toms. Even better, kill two birds with one stone and show off another summer trend by mixing your favorite floral jeans with a plain shirt and printed scarf.

This effortless trend, in my opinion, is the greatest thing that’s ever happened fashion enthusiasts and college students everywhere. We already have enough to think about with tests, budgets and a demanding social life, the last thing we need is to stress over how to match our patterned looks. So give your mind a rest and mix it up a little!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up

Style Advice of the Week

In my book fashion equals fun. There’s no reason why you can’t mix it up every so often. The most well-dressed individuals are those who take risks, and this Fashionista does just that. With her bold choice of color and pattern play this girl is no doubt ready for fashion battle.

Everyone should own at least one well made striped piece. This vintage dress plays double duty and can be dressed up or grunged down for day. The textured tights and lace up combat boots would appear to the textbook eye as so wrong, when they’re actually so right.

To emulate this Fashionista's look pair your favorite textured piece with a patterned piece, such as stripes or chevron. Unsure of how to begin? Keep the colors in the same family and the patterns subtle (but the colors can be bold). (This girl has it down pat.) With this formula you’re bound to have a look that will turn heads.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up

Style Advice of the Week

Fall fashion has caught attention once again, with the return of New York Fashion Week. Everything from haute hats, bold brocades, flirty feathers, and lots of leather were layered on the models while they strutted down the long runways. One trend in particular, which I found on this Fashionista, are bold prints. There's something about the combination of pretty patterns and colors that bring out the beauty of an outift. What's even better is incorporating two unique patterns together and collaborating them to make a chic ensemble. The former StyleGuru yet current Fashionista, combined a hint of floral with a neutral cheetah print scarve to add a pop. Apart from her eye-catching talent of mixing patterns, this Fashionista was basically a walking billboard for the NYFW fall collections– colored tights, mix of short and long hemlines, utility boots and layering in every aspect of the word (this gal definitely knows her trends!).

With spring fast approaching, wild, colorful prints, can be found on every corner of shopping malls. So if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to mix multiple prints into one outfit, now is the time! The trend may seem hard to pull off, but follow these three simple rules to help you become successful mixers before the flowers bloom! For starters, rule one is to keep a consistent color scheme. This could mean using prints the same tones or even just having one color present in both pieces.  Rule number two is use the same pattern in different scales.  For example, try out a fun skinny striped tank with a cardigan with thicker stripes. The contrast will add great dimension to your outfit and while maintaining a chic understated combination. For all of my risk taking Fashionistas, try incorporting your accessories into the mixing for rule number three.  An easy way to accomplish this is to unite a simple pattern in neutral colors with bolder prints. Accessories like shoes and handbags are staple items that can help balance your outfit but can also bring in cool textures. If you do decide to incorporate an accessory into the mix, try keeping one of your pieces a solid color. One last tip is to keep your sense of style in mind. Everyone has a their own interpretion of what colors, patterns and silhouettes look best on their bodies. Always remember to embrace your personality and bring it into your wardrobe.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix it Up

Style Advice of the Week

When I was a young, inexperienced Fashionista, I believed everything had to match in some way. It got to the point where in the ninth grade, I was matching my clothes with my eye shadow. As I grew up and became a little more daring and knowledgeable about fashion, I realized outfits, and more specifically prints, do not have to match.

The mismatch of the different prints on this Fashionista really caught my eye. I love the idea of pairing a striped piece with a different print because I think stripes are the easiest to mismatch while still looking fashionable. Not only does this Fashionista pair stripes with cheetah print, but she also combines black, nude and brown. I remember being told by various fashion sites to never mix brown and black. Well, I feel like she pulled it off smashingly. The nude-colored coat dominates the outfit and matches beautifully with the cheetah shoes, while the striped shirt makes a small but powerful appearance just under the hem of the coat. I love the pop of rebellion.

A mismatch that I have always wanted to try is pairing a striped T-shirt with a floral skirt. Some of you might think “Been there, done that,” but I have yet to try it out, and I think it is adorable. Forever21 is the jackpot for printed skirts. Polka-dots are also a brilliant print to try with stripes, floral or even, for the daring, tribal. Lace can easily be worn with other prints as it has its own attitude, and its transparency does not make it too excessive.

If you are not so sure if your different prints will create a harmonious look, do what this Fashionista did and make it so that one print barely shows, just enough for the viewer to know it's there. This way you are taking a risk with baby steps.

Some designers have taken it upon themselves to do the print matching for you by creating pieces with mismatched prints sewn together. Topshop has a floral and animal print dress that would look adorable with a pair of flats as a stylish outfit for class. Try mixing patterns and textures like seen with this look from Forever21.

Don’t be afraid to take some risks when it comes to mismatching prints. When looking to match different prints, make sure the prints and colors complement each other. Do not pair prints that are so extravagant, they compete with each other for attention. Have fun, take risks, stand out!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix it Up

Uncategorized

Whoever came up with the idea of the London's Vogue's Fashion's Night Out event deserves a medal! Shopping, discounts, music and free cocktails — we want this every week! This year was the busiest and biggest so far and this Fashion Retail Academy student was spotted on her way to the annual night out standing out from the crowd with her individual style and eye-catching Russel & Bromley "Glam Rock" handbag. This oversized bag complements her outfit as it adds a glamorous edge to a rock look (maybe this is the reason the bag is called "Glam Rock!")

What I love most about this outfit is how she has mixed a pretty top and skirt with wedged shoe boots and a studded leather jacket. This leather jacket is from Goldie and as leather continues this fall do not fear in spending that little bit extra if you are thinking about investing in one, as good quality leather is worth the price.

This Fashionista's outfit has got me thinking about how many of us seem to fear mixing and matching different looks to create one outfit. All the inspiration you need is right there in front of you in your wardrobe. The best reason to mix up your outfit is to dress up or dress down what you are wearing. This can simply be done by adding a layer over the top such as a blazer or a cardigan. Try a similar look to this one by adding a leather jacket to a Peter Pan collar top and floral print skirt. If you tuck the top into the skirt, as this Fashionista demonstrates here, you will give the illusion of longer legs.

Be creative and show off the different sides of who you are through your outfit and do not be afraid to mix it up.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix It Up

Uncategorized

If you watch as many style related reality shows as I do, you’ll know full well that hearing the phrase: “too matchy-matchy”, is basically a death sentence. Tim Gunn makes designers optimistic faces melt with these words. Whitney Port was told this at Teen Vogue on an early Hills episode and I’m sure there are many more examples of poor reality stars getting their outfits dissed. Luckily for those reality stars whose fifteen minutes of fame are still ticking, many of this year’s big names in fashion have thrown matching out the window entirely.

Mixing prints was a huge trend in the past year. Of course one of the designers on the forefront of this is the always-crazy Betsey Johnson. Her fall 2011 collection put together pieces you would never imagine being in one outfit and made it look flawless. From leopard print and floral to lace and bright colors, she made those patterns work. She wasn’t the only one to do this though, designers like Anna Sui, Dolce and Gabbana and Thakoon also got in on the mixing trend.

Today's Fashionista is in on it too. She’s wearing a black and white print dress and has paired it with a white infinity scarf with a bird pattern on it. I really liked this combination because it is one you wouldn’t expect but she clearly makes it look effortless. The colors in her brown belt and that bright red bag really pull it all together. She’s also wearing cat eye sunglasses that are a really cool touch for summer and TOMS shoes, one of my favorite brands!

Hint: Mixing prints isn’t always the easiest to pull off. While it may seem as though you can simply throw anything together there’s definitely some thought that goes into it. Try and start by using a similar color scheme in all your prints. That way you don’t have to worry too much about the colors clashing.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix it Up

Uncategorized

I dont know about all of you readers, but I know that I feel like I have a different sense of style every week. Sometimes i'll see someone in the street with a cute "country" look, and i'll just go to the store and buy myself a random pair of cowboy boots. Sometimes I see a trendy "California" look, so off to Hollister I go. Or maybe I saw a new movie this weekend, and the main character dressed classy and elegant in furs and heels all the time, i'll find and event to go, just so I can wear these outfits. Basically; different week. Different style.

This week I was window shopping through the mall and I thought about a piece of fashion advice I was given onc by a friend "If your buying a cardigan or jacket with stripes, match the shirt you plan on wearing underneath with the color of the stripe." So thats what I alway's did. I always wore a plain colored shirt underneath. Then I started thinking, I don't want to look the same as everyone else! I want to make my own style advice, So this piece is about mixing prints.

Mixing prints is dangerous, but I think thats why I like it so much. When the outfit is complete, its different and full of color, you definitely stand out in a crowd. Whether your mixing stripes and floral, plad or polka dots, you can somehow make it work by one simple rule, If the color's in both garments your choosing have at least one similar color, it will work. If all the colors are different, it might just look odd and not blend correctly just keep that in mind. You want to stand out, not stick out.  You can find clothing with all different prints in Old Navy and H&M. Accessories are also a big part of this outfit, bangles, rings, watches, are the perfect finishing touch. Accessories like these can be found in stores like Aldo, and Forever 21.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix it Up!

Uncategorized

At first glance, this outfit seems pretty simple. Silk top, black skirt, and heels. However, this Fashionista’s outfits beauty is in the detail! This Fashionista was wearing a silk royal blue top paired with a turquoise necklace. Having the two different hues of blue looks amazing next to each other! This made me think why not mix and match all sorts of different colors in future ensembles. Try mixing and matching different shades of blues, warm colors like coral and red, and darker shades of purple and pink. Not only are mixing different colors pleasing to the eye, attempting to do this can be affordable! Look in your closet for any simple top and you can jazz it up with affordable accessories from Forever 21.

This Fashionista was also sporting a huge fall trend: the oxford. Oxford shoes have been all over the runways, and worn on models in trendy magazines. They’ve been paired with socks, and knee-high socks. They’ve also been worn as a flat shoe and a high heel. This Fashionista was wearing black patent leather oxfords with ribbon lacing. I absolutely fell in love with these shoes because they are so unique. Most oxfords have regular shoelaces and are plain, not patent, leather. Hers were so perfect for a night out on the town or for a special occasion.
This Fashionista proved that any simple outfit can be ultra fashionable by adding the right accessories and shoes. Try wearing a coral top with a bright red necklace. This is just another example of how mixing colors can make an ensemble look livelier. Also try Urban Outfitters.com for a cool pair of oxford shoes!
