STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military-Chic

Style Advice of the Week

Who knew weather above 40 degrees was possible in Chicago during November? However, we got lucky! I spotted this Fashionista on a warm fall day in Chicago and I knew I had to take a picture of her. She was wearing a skirt with no tights and I just loved the way she pulled everything together. It was a military-chic look.

The mullet skirt was a hot item this summer and it is making its way into the winter. Combat boots are also worn during all seasons and can create so many different looks. This Fashionista paired her mullet skirt with her combat boots and it created a perfect look.  Here is an even longer mullet skirt that is perfect of the colder weather we have ahead of us. Her cropped tank top landed perfectly above her skirt and can go with anything. It is the jacket that is amazing. Her army-inspired jacket is so perfect for day-to-night. It is comfortable enough to go to class in, yet nice enough to go out in. It is also perfect for layering in both the winter and summer months. The color is flattering on everyone. This Fashionistas outfit is the perfect balance between girly and tough.

Although the warm few days may not last, this Fashionista definitely knew how to rock a skirt in November. This outfit can easily be transitioned into the winter months with black jeans or leather pants.  I know we all love warm weather, but it is time you take your summer clothes and bring them into the cold weather.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Chic

Style Advice of the Week

Attention Fashionistas! The military inspired trend has resurfaced this fall. Although this time, it is back with a fresh new style and flare that is ready to bring out the chic soldier in you. It seems like this timeless trend tends to make its round each season because designers are always finding ways to channel the military style of camouflage green into their looks. However, this fall the trend has taken a more feminine edge. Designer brands such as, Victoria Beckham, Burberry and Marc by Marc Jacobs all showcased military inspired pieces in their collections, helping prove that it is possible to rock this trend without looking like a tomboy. With some added militaristic flair, warm color palettes and layering, you will be feeling ladylike in your tough girl apparel in no time!

Since military-inspired pieces have recently taken over the runways, fashion magazines and even celeb style, it was only a matter of time before this trend made an appearance on campus. However, if you are finding the military craze to be a little overwhelming, try a little basic training demonstrated perfectly by today’s Fashionista’s ensemble. With her outfit, she proves that there is one easy statement piece that can instantly capture a materialistic vibe—a military styled jacket. While some military jackets in the past have revealed an edgier look with camouflage, this Fashionista takes on the new feminine appeal with the jeweled flare on her olive green Zara jacket. The unique shapes and colors of jewels detailed on her oversized pocket create a perfect balance of military and elegance that designers have recently been inspiring. Another touch that adds a feminine appeal to the jacket is the gold rim along the edge of her collar. This simple flare has been a popular addition to many collared shirts this season. Even though it’s a small detail, the contrast of the olive green makes the gold pop and ties together the feminine edge of the jacket.
Whether it’s a new take on the army jacket or an olive green blouse, the military-inspired style is here to stay this fall.

Since military and chic joined fashion forces, you’re welcome to embrace your inner tough girl. Whether it’s a new take on the army jacket or an olive green blouse, don’t be afraid to break the style rules. Revive today’s Fashionista’s look with this military jacket found on Polyvore from Topshop. The army green paired with leather portrays this fall’s feminine twist. Or for a more jeweled and couture look, try this military jacket also from Topshop. These jackets will have you feeling feminine in your military apparel in no time!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Go Crazy For Cargo

Style Advice of the Week

It has always been popular to put a feminine spin on decidedly un-feminine clothing. There is something oh-so-sexy about a girl dressing up in menswear, farm clothes, public servant uniforms… you get the point. At the same time, the masculine utilitarianism of the clothes keeps you from looking too girly. One trend that has never gone out of style is the feminine take on the military-inspired look. It can be edgy and fierce while still maintaining a classic feel. This fall, as the temperatures start to drop, heat up your wardrobe with some military-inspired pieces. An easy way to add a little bit of an army feel to your outfit is to go with cargo.

This featured Fashionista sports some Free People cargo jeans with a pair of Steve Madden leather gladiator heels (something else that never gets old: Roman-inspired fashion — toga party, anyone?) One of the things that really make these jeans work is that they are a light wash and fit her perfectly. Skinny cargo jeans are the wonderful union of the loose-fit military pant and the classic skinny jean. She also keeps her outfit from looking too heavy by topping it off with a loose-fit, pretty patterned top.

Hint: My go-to one stop shop online for my fashion wardrobe is ASOS. They have everything you could possibly want to create any outfit. For this week's look, try out these fabulous G-Star high-waisted skinny cargo pants and a pretty sheer top. Steer clear of black pants for a more G.I. Jane look and less middle school goth. For shoes, I suggest sturdier looking footwear, such as cage heels, motorcycle boots, or military-style boots.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Chic

Uncategorized

Lately, the weather in Berkeley has been a little unusual. Instead of the expected summer sunshine and clear skies, Berkeley has been plagued with rain, cold and wind. Like most Fashionistas, I’ve been reluctant to don my winter peacoat, scarves and rain boots to combat this sudden change in weather. While trudging across campus I spotted this Fashionista who showed me that you don’t need to pull out your winter apparel just yet.

This Fashionista combats the cold weather by donning a pair of dark green military-inspired pants. The thick material of the pant provides warmth and comfort while the cut and shape give her a slimming figure. Instead of overwhelming the pants, she simply adds a chic black sweater. This Fashionista’s pants create a tough, edgy and feminine look simultaneously. Her brown oxfords fit into her dark color scheme and complete the look.

Military apparel is a trend recently spotted on the runaway and in the hallway. By donning either a military jacket, shirt, pant or boots, Fashionistas can create a bold and chic outfit. The way this Fashionista styles her outfit demonstrates military apparel’s versatility. Military pants are replacing the classic jean. It's not a bad idea to nvest in a pair.

This popular look can be replicated easily by wearing military attire. For an accessory, try sporting a military backpack or jewelry. This style can be worn in the same manner as jeans. Be aware if you decide to add a print that you chose to sport a military green instead of a military pattern, as it could be difficult to mix and match.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Chic

Uncategorized

One of my favorite trends this fall is military-inspired jackets. The aspect of this trend that makes it so adaptable to everyday life is that the right jacket has the ability to completely transform an otherwise simple day-outfit. This Fashionista shows how to really spice up a burnout tee and pair of black leggings. An outfit such as hers looks fabulous with just merely the addition of her army green KUT from the Kloth jacket and black Enzo Angiolini ‘Saylen’ riding boots. The jacket can normally be found at Nordstrom, but is currently unavailable. KUT from the Kloth does make a similar variation that is available. What I really liked about this particular jacket was the light and casual feel it added to the outfit. This is the perfect type of jacket to throw on this fall as you are running out the door to walk to class. This jacket makes this Fashionista look effortlessly chic.

If you are looking for somewhat of a more edgy approach to a military-inspired jacket, try looking at Urban Outfitters. Urban has many different versions of this style as well as vest versions. Ecote Brand pieces such as the Ecote Surplus Jacket and the Ecote Classic Surplus Vest are not only very reasonably priced, but also give off a grunge '90s-inspired look (another popular look this season).

There are so many different military-inspired jackets this season, each with their own unique style depending on which brand you chose to purchase. As we all accept that school is officially starting after Labor Day weekend (tear), take a quick last minute shopping trip and pick up a military jacket to keep you warm as the weather gets cool.
