STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Midi Skirts

Style Advice of the Week

In between the flowing lengths of maxi skirts and the raised hemlines of daring minis, there is a skirt length that doesn’t get quite the amount of attention it deserves: the midi. Resting somewhere between the knee and ankle, many disregard this length as frumpy or disheveled. This infamous reputation is definitely unwarranted. Midi lengths can vary, so just as with maxi skirts, it is all about finding the right length in order to have a flattering fit.

Performing a delicate balancing act, this Fashionista styled her midi skirt with multiple layers. Choosing a figure-hugging style that hits mid-calf, she paired the skirt with a basic T-shirt, chambray shirt and navy utilitarian jacket. The bulk of the jacket balances the clinging form of the skirt. A fitted skirt suggests a streamlined silhouette and sticking with one color family (in this Fashionista’s case, various shades of blue) also creates a lean line, regardless of the voluminous layers.

The midi skirt can be styled on a full spectrum, from classic to trendy. Midi skirts are available in cuts ranging from full and flowy like Kate Spade’s sonny skirt to Topshop’s form-fitting midi tube skirt. Personal and quirky accessories keep the skirt from being stuffy. This Fashionista layered her midi skirt over black leggings with leather side panels and tossed on a pair of classic blue Vans sneakers. Red reflective sunglasses add a bright pop of color to her blue ensemble and make a unique, playful statement that contrasts with the modest length of the skirt.

A popular trend in the 1940s, the midi skirt eventually gave way to the mini. However, it is beginning to once again debut on runways and college campuses alike. Find the length that works for you and carry this trend into the winter by layering like this University of Georgia Fashionista.
