STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make a Statement

Style Advice of the Week

Unless you are lucky enough to be a beach babe all summer long, a barely-there bikini is only appropriate when you are lounging poolside or catching waves. Just because the thermostat is in the triple digits does not mean that you have to compromise your summer style. Plus, there are only a few more weeks left to showcase your sundresses and flowy skirts on campus.

Instead of layering on the clothes, Natalie, a volunteer at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami, piled on the jewelry. She paired a loose-fitting cream top with a lightweight skirt; bandage dresses are not fit for 100-degree weather. Her sparkle threaded drape-neck shirt glistened in the sun (Literally!), but the thin material helped keep her cool in the heat.

A cobalt blue and gold statement necklace was the focus of her outfit while oversized Kate Spade earrings and an assortment of J.Crew bangles helped pull her look together. Starting with a basic outfit, then adding accessories is a simple way to completely transform an ensemble. A bold statement necklace adds character to an otherwise boring outfit.

For a more casual look, start with a plain, solid colored cotton shirt and a cute pair of shorts. Be sure to stand out by completing the outfit with a bright necklace. Heading to a more formal event? Draw attention to your neckline by wearing a statement piece with a little black dress and strappy heels. It does not matter whether you are sitting in History 101 or hitting the town with friends, accessorize with flair, and you will be the ultimate Fashionista.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make A Statement

Style Advice of the Week

Jewelry can be incredibly underappreciated. While some Fashionistas/os understand the power of well-layered necklaces or a perfect set of bangles, others overlook the change such small details make to an outfit. Whether it’s a pair of earrings, a necklace, bracelet or any other form of jewel, there’s no question that even a single piece has the ability to dress an outfit up, down or just give it a personal touch. This week’s Fashionista uses a statement necklace to turn her otherwise basic outfit into a more polished look.

The statement necklace has many forms, but all have one thing in common: they are the focal point of an outfit because, well, they make a statement. The beauty of this piece lies in its versatility. Different materials create altogether different outfits — jeweled necklaces are fancier, layered chains can give more of a rock and roll feel, and brights and neons are trendy and fun. This Fashionista’s flowered necklace is feminine and fun without being overpowering, and it’s the perfect way to take her denim top and sneakers a bit less casual while adding her own personality to the outfit.

For someone like me, who usually wears less noticeable jewelry (think tiny stud earrings and simple pendant on a thin chain), big necklaces were a bit tough to get used to. But I quickly found that it was the best way to make basics interesting and add something extra to any look. Find a necklace that reflects your personality a bit, or one that follows a trend you’ve always wanted to try. Collar and bib necklaces are a cool way to transform a T-shirt, and flowers or light-colored beads are often a great addition to make an outfit dressier. Buy a few different styles and wear them this summer with anything from maxi skirts to denim shorts to make whatever statement you like.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make A Statement

Style Advice of the Week

For the most part, being a student means having not a lot of money and being a fashion student usually means having none. So going out every week to buy a new outfit isn’t really an option for us. Instead, try reinventing the clothing that you already have in your own closet. Yes I know sometimes this can be really difficult because it can all seem so blah but you would be surprised at what the right jewelry can do for an outfit.

I caught this Fashionista as she was on her way to a really important interview and she definitely looked the part. I had to stop her because she just looked so elegant, classy and full of life! Her outfit was very timeless by keeping black as the main focus and adding a few hints of other neutral colors. For me at least, when I look at this picture my eye is automatically drawn to her black bejewelled statement necklace. I love how this outfit is totally changed by simply adding one piece of jewelry to it and that is the beauty of statement necklaces – they can completely change an outfit from drab to fab.  Try doing what this Fashionista did by sticking to one color palette but alternating textures by adding jewels. Another really cool trend is adding a neon or bold color statement necklace to a vibrant outfit (think color blocking) and trust me when I say it looks awesome.

I can’t even explain to you how many kinds, sizes, shapes and colors of statement necklaces there are out there at the moment. I think it is one of those perfect pieces that every girl should have in her closet to spruce up an old outfit. So instead of buying a whole bunch of new clothes next weekend, go out and buy one or two statement necklaces and you will be fashionably ready for anything coming your way.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make A Bold Statement

Style Advice of the Week

In the past, I would always buy clothing items that were unique because I could not justify spending money on a basic item that was not attention-grabbing. After doing this for so many years, I began to realize that after wearing the unique item once, I never seemed to wear it again. So, I changed my buying habits. I transitioned into buying basic items (which was not easy at first), because I was able to incorporate them into more outfits in different ways. I could layer a basic sweater over a unique top, or wear that basic sweater with a tank and jeans.

Basic clothing items allowed me to expand my wardrobe without spending a ton of money. The best way, I found, to create a wider variety of outfits was through jewelry. And with stores like Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters selling adorable, yet affordable jewelry, there are endless possibilities for outfits. Jewelry, especially statement pieces like chunky necklaces or attention-grabbing feather earrings, can take your outfit from boring to super chic.

This Fashionista flaunts a great example of how a bold statement necklace can spice up a plain outfit. Her hot pink Forever 21 necklace takes center stage layered over her outfit of basics. The necklace pops against her black Kenneth Cole peacoat with a tie-waist and big buttons. Layered underneath is a black Forever 21 top paired with dark 7 For All Mankind skinny jeans. Her gray Steve Madden boots add to the color palette without distracting from the necklace. She keeps the rest of her accessories simple with circle diamond stud earrings from Nordstrom.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make a Statement

Uncategorized

New York City is pretty notorious for wearing lots of black. I myself am a victim to all black, all year. It’s really refreshing to see someone embrace the summertime by wearing lots of color. There are many ways to wear bright vibrant colors. Color Blocking was a huge trend this year, gracing all the runways. However, wearing only one colorful piece can make a huge statement.

When I saw this Fashionista, the first thing I saw was her skirt. When I took a second look, I was in awe. Pairing such a statement piece like this skirt with a causal white tee and gold gladiators is genius. It’s the easiest way to look stylish and effortless. And everyone knows the biggest faux paux is looking like you tried to look that great. I asked this Fashionista why she chose this outfit and she simply said “ Its comfortable”. Her outfit definitely beats sweatpants and sneakers.

This Fashionista has once again proven that style does not have to take a back seat to comfort. So Fashionista and Fashionistos, make a statement with your clothes. Pair a colorful skirt or pants with a white tank for the ultimate cool and chic look!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Make a Statement

Uncategorized

With elections coming up this week, everyone wants to know where everyone else stands on certain issues and which candidates they are going to vote for. This week I encourage all of you Fashionistas out there to literally make a statement with your outfits.

This Fashionista knows how to tell people her position without opening her mouth. Her shirt says, “Make Art Not War,” and she sets the perfect example for how to make a statement. She pairs an oversized graphic tee with a floral printed skirt. She keeps the color schemes the same in her skirt and shirt so she matches but doesn’t look too matchy, which makes for the perfect contrast when you are mixing a wordy tee with prints.

I like this shirt from Urban Outfitters and this one from American Apparel. You can get the American Apparel shirt in a lot of awesome colors so you can mix and match it with anything. You can pair these shirts with printed skirts like this Fashionista did or if its too cold where you live (it’s still blazing hot here) then pair one of these tees with a pair of skinny cargo pants and ankle boots.

Hint: I could not write this post without mentioning this Fasionista’s AMAZING bag. She keeps it within the same color scheme as the rest of her outfit and it looks gorgeous. You can get a bag like this almost anywhere, but for the one of a kind look like this Fashionistas, try the flea market or a thrift store.
