Style Advice of the Week

San Francisco is arguably the best city in America, and by arguably, I mean it is the best city. We top the lists of some of the most coveted titles—being ranked the most educated city in the US gives us students some serious bragging rights. Not to mention we were ranked the number one city to live in 2012. San Francisco has a special kind of vibe that’s hard to understand if you’ve never lived here—the fog horns in the Richmond at 1 AM, the sound of MUNI whizzing by as the fog settles on the Golden Gate Bridge, and sunny days spent in the park are things we hold special as San Franciscans. John Steinbeck said it best: “San Francisco is a golden handcuff with the key thrown away.” That being said, there’s one list San Francisco isn’t on, and that’s any list associating with fashion. For that, SF gets a bad rap for some reason. While San Francisco is not the center of fashion we excel in one area: layering. The thick fog, city winds, and varying weather conditions in each district of the city make layering essential for a fashionable outfit.

This week’s Fashionista is wearing a floral accordion skirt and black scoop neck shirt. She layered on a black leather jacket, tights, thick boot socks and finished it off with a beige scarf. She keeps her layering pieces neutral and makes her skirt the standout item of her outfit. Her long scarf and high-waisted skirt adds length to her look and keeps the layers from looking frumpy. When layering, it’s all about proportions. Be sure to have different lengths working in your look as this week’s Fashionista did. Try a high-waisted maxi skirt with a fitted long sleeve tucked in, and layer with a cropped jacket. For a colder day, pair super skinny jeans with your coziest sweater, a chunky scarf and a warm coat that goes past your sweater. Finish it off with a beanie and boots.
