Style Advice of the Week

Glitter and sequins are a classy (and fun!) part of the fashion industry. However, wearing them takes skill. You have to be careful, so you don’t end up looking like a Disney princess, a Vegas girl…or worse — a disco ball.

This Fashionista was brave and bold, but most of all, she was successful. This was an evening ensemble, so she opted for a black sequined shirt. This was her smartest move. Colored sequins can sometimes (I said SOMETIMES) ride the princess and costume border, which is a line you should never cross. Her black sparkly blouse is definitely dressy, and it’s actually very sophisticated.

Where her creativity truly shines is in the skirt she paired it with. Plastered in bright print of chevron and various shapes, her miniskirt is fun and playful, adding just the right amount of color to this look. Her pointy-toed flats (from DSW) are the perfect choice, inspired by Diane von Ferstenberg’s “Alice” flat, minus the kitten heel. Matching her shoe color to her blouse really pulls every piece together. She wears minimal jewelry and allows her shirt to do all the talking (and sparkling).

Make this outfit yourself, and mix it up! The point is to pair a solid color sequin shirt with a bright bottom. I’m obsessing over this alice + olivia sequined stretch-silk top and this Topshop peplum shirt. Forever 21 has plenty of bodycons and paneled skirts to choose from in every color imaginable. Colored denim is another option for bottoms.

An outfit like this is an opportunity to be creative and a way to express yourself. You may be wearing popular and trendy pieces, but you’re pairing them in a way that is original, personal and true to your style. After all, the best outfits usually happen on accident.
