STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer Up!

Style Advice of the Week

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and final exams creeping up, we’re in that final stretch of the fall semester. Each student has their own method for preparing for exams and more often than not this means meandering around campus in what they may or may not have slept in while clenching their seventh cup of coffee for the day.

Studying doesn’t have to be code for sweatpants though. This Fashionista shows that you can stay toasty and comfortable without having to break out your sweats. Giving a nod to the military-inspired trend, she sports a utility jacket and combat boots. This jacket is the perfect layering piece for your cold weather wardrobe and combat boots are a more attractive alternative to a pair of UGGs.

These army parkas can be found at places like Urban Outfitters and Topshop this season in an assortment of different neutral colors. You may opt for the classic olive green, khaki or gray. Or take my usual advice and wander through local thrift stores to score a one-of-a-kind piece for half the price. Add some cozy socks and combat boots to keep your feet warm and bundle up with a chunky infinity scarf if you want the effortless layered look that this Fashionista achieves.

Don’t let your style decline as the temperature does. Bundle up this winter with layers, instead of sweats, for a look that emulates style and comfort in a laid-back approach.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer Up

Style Advice of the Week

After weeks of fickle heat, the temperature has finally gone below 65 degrees and the air is much chillier in southern California. That means it's officially time to layer up with scarves, sweaters, cardigans and jackets to beat the cold while walking across campus. Some may be disappointed that it won’t be warm as often anymore, but many are excited for the change. It’s a great time to try out more options in styling and also get in the mood for the upcoming holidays.

This Fashionisto exudes straight-up cool and trendiness with his San Francisco Giants baseball hat, heather gray hoodie, leather jacket, dark jeans, Converse, utility backpack, Ray-Ban wayfarers and headphones. This ensemble is the epitome of what fall dressing is all about: weather appropriate yet fashion forward. Layers not only keep you warm, but they also add more depth and style allowing you to experiment with various items in your closet. It’s like a fun sartorial game of choosing what pieces make a fashionable and practical combination while putting your styling to the test.

Taking note from this Fashionisto, wear a sweater, hoodie or cardigan underneath outerwear such as a bomber or a peacoat. You can also go for a more polished and preppy look with a sweater layered over a collared shirt. Dark trousers are always the way to go with this season and helps define the layers. If you're tired of the usual choice of jeans, corduroy pairs are a nice alternative. Complete the look by keeping your head warm with a cap or a beanie.

Whether one is a guy or a girl, anyone can put on a jacket and jeans. With so many more options for this season, why not mix and add different items and accessories to stand out in the midst of ubiquitous winter wear.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer Up!

Style Advice of the Week

I have noticed there is a fine line between summer and fall. What begins as a cool, crisp day quickly morphs into a warm afternoon that makes me wish I had not relegated my shorts to the back of my closet yet. Thankfully, strategically layering various pieces can help you outsmart the oscillating temperatures. This fall’s trendy patterns, colors and textures make layering even more fashionable and fun.

This Fashionista perfects casual layering by incorporating several of fall’s best trends. The oxblood dress, striped boyfriend sweater and leather combat boots form the ultimate fall trifecta. Layering is one of the trickier fall trends, but when executed correctly as this Fashionista proves, the results are a casual look perfect for a day on campus. Since layering requires adding volume to your outfit, it is important to keep the base pieces streamlined and choose loose sweaters or chunky knits to layer on top.

The foundation of the Fashionista’s outfit is a pair of sleek black leggings and a form-fitting burgundy dress. Thrown over the dress is an equally long striped boyfriend cardigan. Bold horizontal stripes add visual interest to the monochrome dress and the pale neutral color offsets the rich and dark tones of the dress and leggings. By keeping the base layer slim, the oversized cardigan adds just the right amount of volume.

Let your imagination run wild when layering this fall. Pairing multiple patterns and various textures will create a unique look and give you more options in your closet. Additionally, piling on the layers allows you to wear your favorite summer pieces just a little bit longer.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer Up

Style Advice of the Week

The UC San Diego campus sits atop a tall rugged bluff overlooking the Pacific. Due to this proximity to the ocean the weather can be a bit uncanny, especially at this time of year. Sometimes I will leave my apartment for my morning classes in beautiful sunny 75-degree weather only to return that afternoon shivering in the foggy low 60s. However, as a junior, I have learned my lesson, and I always carry a black velvet cardigan in my book bag. I spotted this Fashionista by the bookstore and thought she would be the perfect example for UCSD students who want to learn how to layer.

Combat boots are an all-time favorite for college students this year because they can work with warm, heavy outfits or complement a feminine flowing dress. This Fashionista’s bottom layer includes a pair of patent leather combat boots, black tights and an adorable vintage floral printed dress. The first layer would suffice for any warm day in La Jolla.

My favorite aspect about this Fashionista’s ensemble is the way she cleverly cuffed her yellow cardigan over the sleeves of her denim jacket to expose the layering. The yellow peeking out beneath her jacket and over the sleeves adds a splash of bright color to the overall dark palette.

To top off the look, this Fashionista sports a pair of ultravintage John Lennon sunglasses. This key accessory ties each piece together and alludes to the 1960s.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Layer Up

Uncategorized

I have never been a fan of the cold winter and if you agree then just remember a positive of this cold season are the winter trends! Layering is a big trend for this winter, which is why I love this week's outfit as she has layered up with a jumper, fur cardigan, a leather jacket and a scarf. She has added fur heel boots which dresses up her look and gives her height and her on trend leopard print bag from Topshop makes a statement. Her fur cardigan from River Island is my favourite part of her outfit as it makes it look as if the fur is part of the leather jacket which shows her style creativity!

There is such thing as too many layers as you do not want to look like you're wearing your entire wardrobe all at once! A good way to layer your outfit is to put a gillet over a cardigan or long sleeve top and simply add a scarf. I found a black faux fur gilet from Next, which is a key item to have if you are thinking about updating your wardrobe.

When I worked at London Fashion Weekend I was fortunate enough to see some catwalk shows and I noticed how most designers were using the layering trend for this autumn/winter. Jaeger London demonstrated this trend by styling cashmere dresses with chunky knitted cardigans and fur gilets which looked cosy and stylish. The way the Jaeger models were styled can easily be copied. You could also add a skinny belt around your waist if you feel the layers are making you appear a bigger shape than you really are.

When your parent's tell you to "wrap up" listen to them because they are right! This season's layer trend means that we can be warm, cosy and on-trend. Fashion in London has never been so ready for the cold temperatures that we have to face this year.
