STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: If The Shoe Fits

Style Advice of the Week

Dear October, I have a request. Please, stop acting like a Katy Perry song — one week you're hot, the next week you're cold. So as this month's indecisive weather finally starts to calm down, it's time to transition into an autumn wardrobe, which means adding a few layers of knits and ditching the sandals for a warmer alternative. This Fashionista does just that by sporting her Steve Madden oxford shoes. Her combination of a lightweight, floral, chiffon shirt from Nordstrom peeking out under a classic American Eagle navy blazer is perfect for unreliable weather. The cuffed Urban Outfitters jeans show off just a little bit of skin since warm weather isn't over quite yet. Of course, getting to class on time is just as stylish as the outfit you wear. A silver Anne Klein watch pulls all of these classic pieces giving the Fashionista a perfectly understated look.

It’s that time of year when boots are too heavy, yet ballet flats might not be enough to prevent you from getting cold feet walking to your next class (which could be taken either literally or figuratively), but a leather oxford shoe serves to be a happy and fashionable medium between the two. Oxford shoes have been a classic staple for quite some time, but recently, a new eccentric version of the typical shoe with a neon sole is popping up on many recent runway shows. Jill Sander’s statement brogues with a pop of color underneath graced Milan’s runways as well as Cole Haan’s Alisa Oxford in vibrant accenting hues like magenta, aqua and yellow. These candy-colors perfectly compliment the shoes’ tan, brown, beige or blue leather while adding an unexpected surprise and new take on such a basic piece.

So for a quick pick me up or drop of color, add an oxford shoe with a bright sole. Or for a more minimalistic view, go for a timeless look and pull everything together with a classic leather brogue. Although all of these pieces are wardrobe essentials, there is something about the way this Fashionista pulls it all together that just seems so right. The fact that it’s not too overdone, but not too incomplete gives the look a similar feel to my take on the oxford shoe—a happy medium.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: If The Shoe Fits

Style Advice of the Week

As we head into a new season, we can all relate to the feeling of searching store after store in mall after mall for that perfect fall shoe. We get excited over tall leather riding boots and chic flats. We keep a watchful eye on those to die for boots and hope they go on sale mid-season. Yet, we long for another shoe; comfortable and cute, yet still feminine and stylish.

When I spotted this Fashionista, the first thing I saw were her shoes. As I looked for more detail, I noticed that the color wasn’t a typical fall chestnut or dark brown. They had more of a rich orange undertone, which I found was interesting. What I loved most about her shoes, were their subtle cross between a moccasin and a loafer. I really liked their loafer style, as they weren't too harsh or clunky, as some loafers tend to be. The cute tassels only added to the overall appeal. I was also told that the fit of the shoes was more like a moccasin, comfortable and relaxed.

It was refreshing to see this type of footwear worn with a dress. I’m used to seeing, and admittedly wearing, flats or boots with most of my dresses. This look, paired with a cute striped sweater dress and a deep red cross-body bag, is yet another perfect outfit inspiration as fall approaches. This ensemble can even be transformed from day to night by just adding a classic demin jacket.

Her shoes reminded me of my Minnetonkas at home, which I wear all year because of their versatility. To get her look, be sure to check out the Kilty Suede Moc by Minnetonka. If you don’t like the typical brown, they come in a variety of colors. To me, this seems like an ideal fall shoe!
