STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Gray Matters

Style Advice of the Week

The Sunshine State hasn’t been living up to its name, as far as north and central inhabitants can see. With clouds ranging from ghostly pale to dark and dim, we've gone a good few days without seeing much of our bright blue sky.  It may seem natural to succumb to the doldrums of the day with old but loveable sweats and sweatshirts, or even combat the mood with boisterously bright hues. Don’t get me wrong- both are wonderful choices- but there are always other options.

Today’s Fashionista went for a different look: pairing pale colors that match the stormy weather without being gloomy. This Fashionista chose to skip the blue jeans and go for slate-colored skinnies. BlueFly, a fantastic place to search for clothes online, helped me find a similar pair by Unknown Factory. A loose, sheer top balances the slick silhouette created by the bottoms. This lavender blouse is covered in flowers, but you can incorporate one of the big fall trends, polka dots, by wearing this ModCloth blouse. In my opinion, the best detail of the outfit is the way the cream-colored canvas sneakers bring out the petals in the top. A similar Keds pair can be purchased through Zappos, but if you’d like yours to match the white polka dots of the Modcloth shirt, white versions are available, as well.

No matter how bad the weather looks when you wake up, don’t let stormy days get you down. Follow nature’s lead and take a day to cool off with muted colors like shades of gray.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Gray Matters

Uncategorized

August is here and so are the three digit temperatures in Salt Lake City. However, August also means everyone's mind is on fall fashion. Today's fashionista gives us a glimpse into what is to come this season.

The color gray made a huge impact on the fall runway. Head-to-toe looks were the highlight of this hue. Band of Outsiders offers a loose fitting pant and top combo that is a great look that can go from work to a night out smoothly. Calvin Klein shows a '60s inspired shift dress that has a leather bodice and a wool skirt. The King of neutral colors, Helmut Lang, offers a more relaxed version with a combo of gray jeans, a fun top and a breezy shawl.

This week's Fashionista gets her inspiration from the rain storm we have had coming through for the last couple of days. She takes cue from the fall runway in all the right ways by mixing textures to create a modern gray look. For her top she chose a sheer embroidered piece that is contrasted by her wool gray shorts. You can find a similar top on Shopbop by Joie, as well as some shorts by JNBY. A true CollegeFashionista never stops halfway with a trend. This archeology student takes the trend a step further by combining her outfit with gray tights and equally stormy ballet flats. Finally, she breaks up the clouds by adding a camel cross-body bag; yet another hot color for fall.

Hint: You can easily bring a bit of fall flavor into your wardrobe without having to get the cool weather clothing out quite yet. Keep you choices light and airy as to not look like you read the forecast wrong. When wearing monochrome colors, keep in mind the fall craft trend: the more textures and patterns the better.
