While I could not be happier living in the City of Brotherly Love (or at Penn, is it just the City of Bros?), I will be the first to admit that I also occasionally get homesick. As a New Yorker, and like every typical New Yorker that you’ll ever meet, I was brought up to appreciate the little things that make “The Big Apple” “The Big Apple.” I love the hidden nooks and crannies of New York City that I’ve come to appreciate on my own, but I also cannot deny my love for the New York City glamour that shines off every NYC shop window, races with every yellow taxi and plays with every “Sex and the City” episode. When I spotted this Fashionista returning from a (clearly) successful shopping trip, I could not help but be reminded of my and her NYC roots and of the great city in which every sidewalk is a runway.
While Carrie Bradshaw would probably have opted for at least a hint of pink and one of her 18,327 pairs of designer stilettos, this Fashionista went for a more practical (and much more college-appropriate) look while remaining true to her New Yorker style and attitude. By wearing all black except for her coat, this week’s Fashionista kept her look sophisticated and chic. Rather than emphasizing color in her ensemble, she played up the textures of her clothing. The leather in her black boots and fur-lined vest was balanced by the softer textures in her leggings, cotton shirt and fur jacket.
While Penn students are typically highly influenced by preppy Northeast style, try also channeling your hometown this week. From the west? Channel your inner Annie Oakley-meets-the-East-Coast and dress up your western boots by pairing them with a dress.
