STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Play on Proportion

Style Advice of the Week

My style advice to you this week comes in the form of shopping advice, as well as general life advice. Never underestimate the importance of keeping an open mind and exploring unexpected places. As I spoke to this Fashionista about her look, I discovered her tye-dye dress is from the plus size section at Zara. When I'm shopping with friends, the person with the best finds is always the one who looks where the rest of us think not to. Limiting yourself when shopping is a mistake, and this Fashionista is here to remind us of that. This rule applies to plus size, children's and men's sections of stores. My closet is filled with cropped T-shirts from the kids section, comfy V-necks from plus size and sweater's from the men's department.

This Fashionista chose to base her look around her oversized find, worn with a simple black bra and basic leggings to maintain a level of comfort. This look is about staples: cropped denim jackets and black infinity scarves should be in your wardrobe. Simple black wedges add some height to this play on proportion, but fill their role as a simple staple. If you don't already own a simple black bra, then I suggest this bralette from Honeydew Intimates. Think of it as a layering piece more than underwear–trust me you'll thank me later. For a shirtdress I recommend this sheer piece from Forever 21. Belt it if you feel the need, or wear it open as a flowing vest. If you choose to wear it open, add this top from BlackMilk underneath for modesty and warmth. Follow this Fashionista's lead with leggings on the bottom–I'm obsessed with this velvet pair from Pitusa. Throw on sneaker wedges, your favorite denim jacket and an infinity scarf and you're ready to go!

Explore the realm of oversized and under-sized clothes for a mixed style that will keep you comfortable and eclectic. As it cools down you'll appreciate the layers and the simplicity of focusing your look on one key piece.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fifty Shades of Grey

Style Advice of the Week

It’s that time of year again, Fashionistas! As our once-endless amount of carefree summer days are dwindling down to the dreaded single digits, we’re beginning to focus more on textbook rentals and class schedules and less on late nights and fringe bikinis. Though we all live for our treasured summer vacations, I have to admit that a tiny (or maybe large) portion of me loves the transition into fall and back-to-school season in general. Maybe it’s just me, but who doesn’t love shopping for brand new school supplies and clothes to match? In my opinion one can never have too many mechanical pencils or colored Sharpies. This year, as we ease our way into the fall season and re-enter our structured lifestyles, I urge you all to embrace the coolness of grey. Though this color is known to have a dark and gloomy reputation, the fall 2012 fashion season is proof that this hue is completely revamped and undeniably chic!

I spotted this Fashionista looking gorgeous in grey as she hurried to an afternoon shift at her summer job. In a simple yet eye-catching slate grey tunic, she was dressed perfectly for the beautiful overcast day. Pairing her tunic with her go-to pair of slim-cut jeans and natural wedges gives her look a relaxed, fall-ready vibe. Knowing that grey works best when it’s matched with even more grey, this Fashionista rocked an adorable heather grey cross-body satchel as well. To complete her ensemble, she piled on a heap of vintage silver jewelry and also sported some reflective black aviators.

As we bid adieu to our beloved summer staples, just remember that the excitement of fall fashion anxiously awaits us! Kick-start your fall wardrobe by incorporating a little more grey and embracing this understated hue as your new favorite neutral. It’s the perfect look to rock while purchasing all your new school supplies — just try not to overdose on neon highlighters and Lisa Frank folders.
