This season, brightly colored coats seem to reign supreme in the hierarchy of outerwear. If you already have one of these colorful pieces in your closet or are currently out on the prowl for one, you might be wondering how best to wear it on a day-to-day basis. Barnard student Mariana shows us how to pull off a blue coat, by pairing it with a simple, yet classic outfit.
To emphasize the bold color of the coat, this Fashionista has chosen to wear all black underneath. The all black look not only pays homage to fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Onassis, but also to the chic New Yorker prototype who always seems to be wearing a uniform of black layers. Use an entirely black outfit (aside from outerwear), as an opportunity to experiment with textures. To add a few extra layers of warmth, pair black corduroys with a cable-knit, turtleneck sweater.
Mariana’s coat was purchased at J.Crew, where similar shapes are also offered again this season. The thin silhouettes of these coats are sure to complement many different body types and maintain warmth. Another plus for this shape is the fact that the collar, and lack of hood, encourages wintery extras such as hats and earmuffs. As for coat color, if you wear a lot of colors daily, adding a bold coat color to the mix might not be so wise. However, if you prefer neutrals, a brightly colored coat would be the perfect piece to enliven your everyday look.
