From Sean Hunter’s brooding charm on Boy Meets World to Ryan Atwood’s bad boy attitude on The OC, every high school has that “cool kid” that everyone wants to know. And although these characters are extremely prominent in our awkward, “coming of age” years, we probably also all had that one kid on the playground with the army-print cargo shorts and pint-sized Timberland boots who maintained the hierarchy of the playground and decided which kickball we’d use for our recess activities. When we enter into college, these stereotypical characters are forgotten (hopefully) and we are all on equal playing field. Although I haven’t thought of Sean Hunter or Ryan Atwood since starting my undergraduate degree, this week’s Fashionistos daring duds took me back to a time and place where the bad boy ruled.
Pairing his vintage, denim jacket with a plaid button-down and army green chinos, this Fashionisto exudes “cool.” The denim jacket/plaid shirt combo was a statement look for the ‘90s, grunge-esque scene. Making this look modern with the tighter fit and hue of his chinos and light material of his plaid shirt, this Fashionisto manages to modernize the look. Finishing it off with a pair of black Ray-Bans and all black Volley International sneaks, this Fashionisto pulls off a Kurt Cobain inspired look with his own modern twist.
It’s always a fun idea to take a look that was excessively popular in another era of time and make it your own. When lacking inspiration, try googling a bunch of different decades trends. Decide which aesthetic best speaks to your personal style and make it your own by adding a few modern pieces. For a ‘90s inspired look like this Fashionistos, blast some Nirvana and throw on a patterned button-down over your favorite graphic tee. Add some colored chinos and modern sneaks for a pulled together ensemble.
