STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Cool Britannia

Uncategorized

Did you know there was a wedding in Great Britain last week? Royal Wedding fever swept the country as the UK went mad in anticipation of Will and Kate's big day. The spotlight was firmly on St Andrews, the place where Prince William met Kate Middleton and locals and students came together to celebrate the nuptials in St Salvator’s Quad. Tickets were in high demand as the world’s media descended on the location; with such a colossal media presence, people really upped their style game.

It was lovely to see so many people dressed up for the event, but in a sea of fascinators, morning suits and Ginger Spice-inspired Union Jack dresses, this Fashionista’s stunning retro style stood out. She firmly flew the flag for Great British vintage style with her polished pin-up ensemble. I asked her if she was dressed like this for a particular reason and she told me that her group of friends had decided to go all out in retro 1940s clothing just for the fun of it.

The pussy bow blouse is lady-like and demure and the oversized bow adds a glamorous touch. Cute puffed sleeves balance the volume of the skirt. There are pleats galore on high street thanks to romantic pleats on the catwalk at Chloé. This Fashionista’s vintage skirt is the real deal and the sunray pleats and stunning turquoise shade catch the eye.

The key to this look is the details: the retro accessories give a polished feel. Lady-like white slingback sandals are complemented by matching pillarbox red nails and toes. The sequinned Union Jack clutch bag from Accessorize adds just the right amount of daytime sparkle and fun. Lace gloves such as these from ASOS add sophistication to any ensemble.

This stunning ensemble was topped off with a beautiful retro hat, which brings the whole look together and accentuates the retro impact. The contrasting red and blue colour were appropriate for the celebrations and the net veil perched jauntily atop this Fashionista’s retro hair roll was the perfect final touch to this ensemble.

After the stunning hats on display at the Royal Wedding, I predict a massive headwear trend. A vintage style such as this one is a fun way to wear the trend, sophisticated, playful and oozing retro glamour. Accessorize does a fun range of headwear such as this leopard pill box with bow and veil,  which is retro with a modern twist.

Hint: If you’re not feeling brave enough to wear the retro look head-to-toe then sunglasses are a simple way to incorporate vintage cool into your look. Cat eye and round framed glasses are all over high street at the moment. These pink curved sunglasses from Topshop are ideal.
